IBM Offers Low Rates, Deferred Payments for IT Financing
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
With a tight economy, and companies unwilling to spend on IT except where absolutely necessary, and interest rates continuing to fall asymptotically to zero, IBM has to do something to help push its products. Offering attractive financing terms is just about the best option Big Blue has in its bag of tricks. That's why IBM has recently introduced a low-rate financing deal and a deferred-payment deal. HP Signs OEM, Support Deal With SuSE for Linux
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Back in March, Hewlett-Packard inked a deeper alliance with commercial Linux distributor Red Hat, which is the dominant supplier of Linux licenses and support in North America. That alliance gave HP the ability of pre-installing the enterprise versions of its Red Hat Linux distributions on Intel-based HP ProLiant servers and also made HP the single point of contact for technical support. HP announced that it has signed a similar alliance with SuSE, which is the clear number two vendor in the Linux market in general and leads in Europe in particular. READ MORE >

Unisys Puts Sun's JVM On Its ES7000 Wintel Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Microsoft may be allergic to Java, but an increasing number of its key partners have recently shown that if Big Bill doesn't want to put Java on its Windows machines, then they are happy to do it for their customers to save them the hassle. Unisys announced on Monday that the company will make a Java Virtual Machine available for its ES7000 Intel-based mainframes, which by and large run Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. READ MORE >

VMware Gets Into Utility Computing with Control Center
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
VMware is best known for its virtual machine partitioning software, which allows a Windows or Linux workstation or server to be carved up into slices, fitted with virtual 32-bit X86 machines, and run multiple and incompatible operating systems within those partitions. IBM Regains Top Spot on TPC-C Test With Power4+
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Intel has announced the new "Madison" Itanium 2 processors. In many of the presentations that Intel and its OEM partners used in announcing their intentions for the latest of its 64-bit processors, IBM's Power4+ line of pSeries RISC/Unix servers were the touchstone against which Madison was measured. IBM didn't like this, and it did something about it. READ MORE >
