Price Cuts Keep Server Shipments Humming

With all of the hemming and hawing about the humdrum economic situation, you would think that server shipments would be falling. But for the last two quarters, they have, seemingly miraculously, been up modestly, according to research from Gartner. This suggests that many companies are continuing to add capacity despite the downturn and, perhaps most significant, that what really seems to have changed is not their appetite for server capacity but the makeup of their server diet. Red Hat Supports AMD's 64-Bit Hammer Chips

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices got a lift last week when commercial Linux distributor Red Hat announced that it will support its variant of the Linux operating system on the forthcoming 64-bit "ClawHammer" and "SledgeHammer" processors, which are known by their brand name Opteron and which are expected to take on Intel's 64-bit Itanium processors starting sometime in the first half of next year in the workstation and server markets.
