Midrange Madness
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Midrange Madness is not just the name of the softball team on which the San Diego contingent of Guild Companies plays. It is also the latest hyperbolic mania to grip the IT community. You've been ignored for years, and now everybody wants to be your friend. The reasons are simple. Midsized companies, which generally buy midrange servers, are in the sector of the IT market that is still growing. The midrange is also the biggest identifiable target. READ MORE >

HP Promises Q4 Profit, Explains Q3 Miss
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Hewlett-Packard yesterday reported financial results for the fiscal third quarter ended July 31, and the numbers were not as good as HP's top brass or Wall Street had expected. Dell Cuts Prices for Enterprise Products
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Just after Hewlett-Packard announced in its financial results that it might have cut prices a little too low on certain products in the most recent quarter and therefore missed profit targets, rival Dell rubbed a little salt in the wound by announcing price cuts across its whole line of enterprise products. Dell also cut prices on some consumer products such as laptops. READ MORE >

Open Source Guru Picks Apart SCO Evidence
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Bruce Perens, a defender and evangelist of the open-source community, has gotten his hands on the presentation The SCO Group made last week at SCO Forum in Las Vegas. Any lawsuit is a gamble, especially one pitting two headstrong technology companies against each other in a jury trial. So "Lost Wages" was probably as good a setting as any to divulge what SCO believes are some of the smoking guns in its lawsuit against IBM. READ MORE >

by Hesh Wiener

There's nothing quite as exciting as a battle between giants, particularly if observed from a safe distance. And there's nothing quite so scary as a battle between giants, particularly if you happen to be close enough to wonder whether you might suffer collateral damage. That's why lots of people flock to sumo wrestling matches but stay clear of the ring. And that's why lots of computer users pay attention to benchmark contests but are wary of justifying strategic decisions on the basis of these tests. READ MORE >
