Gartner Updates Server Platform Rankings
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Analysts at Gartner have put out an updated application server evaluation model that any prospective server buyer should take a gander at. Back in January, I went through the prior Gartner server comparison and lamented that Gartner had not yet added Linux systems to the comparison. With the latest model, a Linux is ranked next to big SMP boxes like the iSeries. READ MORE >

Microsoft Promises to Make Windows More Secure
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Microsoft has been trumpeting its Trustworthy Computing initiative since February 2002 as a bold plan to put the company's entire code base under the microscope and to look for holes that hackers, worms, and viruses can exploit. IBM Offers Self-Managing Blade Server Bundle
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The reason why IBM bought Canadian systems provisioning and automation software maker Think Dynamics this year was to allow it to create Wintel and Lintel servers that could help provision themselves based on policies set by business directors. And today IBM is announcing a special bundle of hardware and software that aims to create a more self-managing platform for Web infrastructure than it has offered to date. READ MORE >

Sun Talks Up Solaris for X86, Misses Big Opportunity
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Metaphors are fun, so here's one: Sun Microsystems was early to the X86 party, got a little drunk on its own booze, left early, fell into a ditch after antagonizing its friends, got a bad hangover, and now it seems to have realized what happened, has choked down some aspirin and cleaned itself up, and come back to the party. Another sharp wiseguy came to the party while Sun was being belligerent--one might call that wiseguy Linux--and now Sun is trying to win back those X86 friends and influence people. READ MORE >

by Kevin Vandever
Why did you get into IT? Maybe you took a programming class in college and liked it so much that you changed your major. Or maybe you knew before you even went to college that you wanted to twiddle bits for a living. Whatever the case, I doubt any of you got into this IT racket so you could swim in red tape, go to infinite meetings, or become a glorified babysitter, but that's what happens to many of the best programmers.
