Novell Buys SuSE, Targets Linux Dominance
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The industry has been wondering about Novell's intentions in the Linux operating system and middleware markets, and, yesterday, when it shelled out $210 million to acquire commercial Linux distributor SuSE, it made those intentions clear: it wants to dominate the Linux server and workstation market as it once dominated the file server market, with its venerable NetWare operating system. No more, no less. READ MORE >

HP Fleshes Out Integrity Line with Midrange Boxes
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Hewlett-Packard this week announced that it has finished engineering the baby versions of the Itanium 2-based Superdome servers, aimed at midrange customers. The new rx Series machines, which max out at 8 or 16 processors, use the same "Pinnacle" sx1000 chipset as the 64-way Superdome server. With these two machines, which are sold under the Integrity brand name, HP has a full line of Itanium 2 machines that span from 2 to 64 processors and run Windows, HP-UX, or Linux. READ MORE >

HP Launches Low Cost, Low End Xeon DP Box
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Hewlett-Packard this week has launched a new low-cost line of entry rack-mounted Intel-based servers in an effort to attack the high-performance-computing and small-and-midsized-business (SMB) markets with a machine that it feels is more compelling than alternatives from Dell, IBM, and Sun Microsystems, as well as from hundreds of white box server makers that try to undercut the big players. Is SCO's Attack on the GPL a Bluff, Or Is It in the Cards?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
So is The SCO Group really going to take on the GNU General Public License in its $3 billion lawsuit against IBM? Or is this a bluff, like its plan to start sending bills to Linux shops to license Unix intellectual property that it asserts it owns and that it says are inside the guts of Linux? As I See It: The Forces of 'Should'
by Victor Rozek
There's something I've been meaning to write about for a long time. But you know how it is. There are other important things to write about, and months go by and I still don't get to it. So I've resolved to do it now. Ring. Damn, there's the phone. I'll be right back. . . . Okay, I'm back. But you know, I'm kind of hungry, so I'll just run down to the kitchen and make myself a sandwich. Oh, and after I eat I'll check the mail, pay some bills, maybe trim the old toe nails. Then I'll tackle the subject I've been avoiding for so long: procrastination. READ MORE >
