Sun Continues Low-End, High-Volume Product Push

Gartner Says Server Sales Up a Tiny Bit in Q3

While server shipments have been up a healthy amount in recent quarters, what we have been all looking for as sellers and consumers of servers is an uptick in server revenues. If vendors are actually making money selling servers, that is a pretty good indication that the economy is on the mend. Well, if server stats are an economic barometer, then the latest numbers from Gartner's Dataquest unit would seem to indicate that the economies in North America, Europe, and Asia are stabilizing. HP to Resell RadiSys Carrier-Grade Servers to Telecoms and SPs

Hewlett Packard announced last week that it has tapped specialist hardware maker RadiSys to supply it with a line of rack-mounted blade servers that adhere to the myriad standards developed by the telecommunications and service provider industries. While HP has a substantial business selling PA-RISC Unix servers into the telecommunications and service provider markets, it does not have a carrier-grade Linux-on-Intel line that meets industry standards. Disk Array Sales Firming Up, Says IDC

On configured midrange and enterprise servers today, main memory and disk storage can account for anywhere from 50 to 70 percent of the total cost of acquiring that system. So you would think that it would be relatively easier to make money selling disk arrays, right? Wrong. The disk market has been cut-throat for years, and it shows no sign of abating any time soon. But with business perking up a bit, makers of disk arrays are saw their top lines stabilize in the third quarter, according to an analysis of the market released by IDC last week. READ MORE >
