IBM Supports Gallatin Xeons in xSeries 440, Delivers 16-CPU Server

IBM last week rolled out support for the "Gallatin" Pentium 4 Xeon MP server processors into its existing eight-way xSeries 440 "Vigil" servers, which use the "Summit" XA chipset. IBM also announced a special 16-way version of the Summit boxes, which are based on the earlier "Foster" Xeon MP processors. This 16-way is apparently not the same machine as the "Man-o-war" box that IBM is expected to launch in early 2003 using the "McKinley" Itanium 2 processors. READ MORE >

HP Demos Itanium 2 Superdome Running Windows, Linux, and Unix

Hewlett-Packard is this week showing off a prototype of its high-end Superdome server using the Itanium 2 processor from Intel at the Gartner Data Center Conference in Las Vegas. The machine is not currently shipping, but one that resembles it and that uses the "Madison" version of the Itanium 2 chip rather than the current McKinley chips is expected to ship sometime in mid-2003, according to our sources at HP. IBM's Linux Plan Questioned by Aberdeen Report

What is behind IBM's multi-billion dollar investment in Linux technology? With that kind of money riding on the outcome of what is shaping up to be a war against Windows and Unix, IBM's plan better be a good one. According to a new report from Aberdeen Group, IBM's strategy can be analyzed by focusing on four areas--Linux distributions, IBM eServer platforms, infrastructure middleware, and application support.
