Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(Guild Companies) While IBM's pricing for the new iSeries boxes will make or break how it sells into new and vintage OS/400 accounts, the real key will be how much--or how little--current customers pay for server upgrades. To help OS/400 customers determine if upgrading to the new iSeries hardware is really in their best interests, here's part one of an iSeries upgrade guide, calculated to get you through the marketing quagmire.
(Guild Companies) WebSphere Application Server Express for iSeries arrives on February 21, and it won't be coming alone. Almost 70 iSeries ISVs have incorporated WebSphere Express support into their products, with a lot more to come. According to IBM, more than one third of business partners participating in the new WebSphere Express Partner Pack program are iSeries ISVs, which positions our beloved black box very well in this newly forming lower-cost marketplace.
(The 400 Group) IBM isn't the only one bundling OS/400 software. Early trends reveal third-party OS/400 software vendors--like SoftLanding and MAPICS--are building their applications around, and packaging their offerings with, the low-cost WebSphere Application Server Express software.
(Guild Companies) In conjunction with the new iSeries hardware, IBM also announced new SCSI disk drive and PCI-X disk OS/400 controller features on January 20. While pricing and performance details weren't available at announcement time (funny thing, that), this article fills in the gaps with detailed information about price, performance, and how the new features compare to the older features they're replacing.
(iSeries Network) Because IBM is releasing new iSeries storage features, does that mean the third-party OS/400 storage marketplace will dry up? Not a chance, if you listen to storage vendor reaction from companies like Key Information Systems, EMC, Macrocomp International Technologies, and BCC. Read here for vendor feedback.
(MC Press Online) Is an "i" the same as a "p" when it comes to Linux downloads? At LinuxWorld last month, IBM made no new public announcements about Linux on the iSeries support. However, IBM has been quietly posting evaluation copies of pSeries Linux products to a new Web site, downloads that this article says are suitable for both pSeries and iSeries use. Does this work? You be the judge.
(MC Press Online) IBM Lotus revealed a new Lotus Domino Toolkit for WebSphere Studio at the recent LotusSphere show. The new toolkit will be included at no cost in an undisclosed future version of Domino Designer 6, but you can download it now at the Lotus Developer Domain Beta Programs Web site.

Vendor Announcements, Promotions And Deals
(Guild Companies) Bytware recently started shipping a new release of its PeekPlus product, Version 3.4. PeekPlus is an application that allows help desk personnel to assist in training and diagnosing problems by seeing exactly what's occurring on users' OS/400 screens, including their keystrokes. New features include OS/400 V5R2 compatibility, support for OS/400 security levels 40 and 50, and enhancements that reduce or eliminate the risk of security exposure while using the software.
(Guild Companies) CCSS plans to deliver more advanced logical partitioning (LPAR) management capabilities in QSystem Monitor Version 11 later this year, capabilities that will help companies manage increasingly complex LPAR environments. These new features will be delivered in the product's Online Monitor module, a Windows-based program that uses a series of color-coded bars to visually communicate the real-time status of certain OS/400 server performance characteristics.
(Guild Companies) DCSoftware recently started shipping a new version of its suite of purge and archive utilities, ARCTOOLS/400, designed to help companies make the most of their expensive CPWs and disk. The company also released a special add-on module for ARCTOOLS/400 designed specifically for J.D. Edwards applications.
(Guild Companies) Inventive Designers has issued Scriptura 1.1, the latest release of its XML-based, multiplatform document design and output management tool. The new version features an enhanced Scriptura Designer with new features such as print preview and improved text control. It also contains an Enterprise Edition of the Scriptura engine designed for high-volume printing, with new features such as intelligent data caching and support for the PCL5 print data stream.
(iSeries Network) At PartnerWorld next week, IBM and global systems integrator Logical will announce a two-year partnership in which Logical will push IBM solutions in the northwestern United States, Northern California, and selected U.S. cities. As a Hewlett-Packard reseller, Logical will still sell HP solutions in its current markets, which may help IBM bring iSeries servers into HP shops.
