Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) To get a better grip on the new iSeries features, options, and intricacies, check out part two of Guild Companies' iSeries upgrade guide. This week's edition answers readers' questions; provides compatibility guides for existing hard drives, tape drives, and memory cards; shows how IBM is handling memory conversions; and describes software requirements for the new hardware.
(The 400 Group) Beware! IBM may have slipped an installation "gotcha" into its new iSeries models. In its new hardware announcement letter, IBM specifies that, for Models 800, 810, and 825, initial installation requires customer setup, which can potentially mess up your upgrade or cause you to hire a third-party vendor for installation when you upgrade to one of these boxes.
(Guild Companies) IBM announced a new messaging offering this week called IBM Community Tools, an application suite of community-based problem-solving tools for rapidly exchanging knowledge and technical skills. IBM will rely on the 50,000-member iSeries Nation user group to gain acceptance for the software and to build its value as a collaboration device.
(iSeries Network) COMMON has opened online lab registration for its spring conference, to be held in Indianapolis from March 9 though 13. The labs always fill up early, so you may want to register now.
(MC Press Online) IBM's new SMB Advantage program will dedicate $500 million in incentives to business partners to win small and midsized businesses (SMBs). But what does this mean to the average customer who's been fed a steady diet of WebSphere-based marketing for the last few years?
(iSeries Network) Now that IBM is offering unlimited 5250 capabilities in the new iSeries Enterprise Edition, that should put FAST400--the CFINT-buster that disables OS/400's interactive governor--out of business, right? Maybe not, as Storage Solutions Group, the marketing force behind FAST400, thinks the new hardware and packaging will actually increase its business.
(iSeries Network) With the new iSeries Model 8XX systems and software, will iSeries sales rebound in 2003? SoundView Technology Group thinks so, and it has provided a calculated target revenue figure for 2003 that's higher than the previous year for the first time since 1999. Although this story provides a 2003 forecast, it doesn't provide the logical thinking or the supporting data to prove this assertion. Let us know if you agree.
