Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(The Four Hundred) Are you ready for the granddaddy of all iSeries upgrade guides? Using IBM's numbers as raw data, Guild Companies has put together a giant spreadsheet listing the configurations, model numbers, relative performance, and the total cost of upgrading processor and interactive features for each of the 531 possible iSeries and AS/400 upgrades into the new iSeries line.
(The Four Hundred) Storage Solutions Group, the marketing company that peddles the FAST400 interactive governor-buster for AS/400 and iSeries machines, hasn't been stopped by the recent revamping of the iSeries line. Business is brisk, and SSG expects it to stay that way. Changes in customers' buying patterns, the advent of a reseller channel, and a likely iSeries price increase make SSG's financial prospects seem pretty good.
(Computerworld) IBM has posted patches for three buffer overflow problems in Lotus Domino Server 6.0, flaws that were reported by a United Kingdom security consulting company. If left unrepaired, these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to run malicious code on machines running IBM's Lotus Domino or iNotes software. Also note that these patches are included in the Notes/Domino 6.0.1 Maintenance Release/Maintenance Update, which is not yet available for iSeries Domino.
(The Four Hundred) Why doesn't IBM create OS/400-based blade servers? That's the question Guild Companies is asking as it examines Big Blue's new blade offerings and makes the not-so-casual observation that IBM could easily produce an OS/400-based blade server.
(iSeries Network) IBM wrapped up its $2.1 billion purchase of Rational Software last week, providing it with a fifth software brand that may add an estimated $560 million to Big Blue's yearly software revenue.
(IDG News Service) The European Commission cleared IBM's Rational Software acquisition last week, declaring that "the deal will not significantly alter the current competitive structure of the related markets."
(COMMON) Want some input into what COMMON will offer at future conferences? Then take some time to go to the COMMON Web site and fill out a short (seven questions) survey on the educational content that the largest iSeries user group presents twice a year.
(iSeries Network) While Big Blue is boasting that it received more than $1 billion in revenue from sales of Linux-based software, hardware, and services last year, few people believe much of the money comes from the iSeries. Some think that's because Linux falls outside of the core needs, experience, and skills of iSeries shops. Hope springs eternal, however, but hope for widespread adoption of Linux on the iSeries still may be some distance into the future.
(iSeries Network) One vendor's story backs up several recent IBM business strategies. Tony Madden, vice president of sales for Avnet's IBM business, says that most of Avnet's real growth is in WebSphere and Tivoli, that Domino sales are steady because the messaging market has matured, and that the small-and-midsized-business market is spending more while the enterprise marketplace has slowed down. If Tony's experience is typical, it backs up a number of IBM initiatives.
