Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(The Four Hundred) While a lot's been made of the new iSeries machines announced in January, we haven't heard as much about the iSeries for Domino servers that IBM also launched in January. Here's an interesting take on the new offerings, including list prices, comparisons between the old and new Bumblebee servers, and how IBM is enabling WebSphere and Java on these machines when Domino isn't active.
(The Four Hundred) Every few years, IBM jacks up maintenance prices on old equipment, and classic AS/400s have not been spared. Last week, Big Blue announced higher prices to maintain various vintage AS/400 machines, and the new prices go into effect July 1. The idea is to get "old iron" AS/400 shops to move to the iSeries or to wring more money out those that don't.
(IBM) IBM has formally announced that OS/400 V5R2 will be the last release to support the original HTTP Server for AS/400 Web server. The original HTTP Server will be removed from the IBM HTTP Server for iSeries feature in a future release. This completes OS/400's shift from the proprietary original HTTP Server architecture to the newer open-source-based HTTP Server (powered by Apache) Web server.
(iSeries Network) IBM Lotus has changed several product names to more descriptive (and more boring) alternatives. IBM now refers to SameTime as Lotus Instant Messaging and Lotus Web Conferencing (yawn). The QuickPlace name is also gone; it's now Lotus Team Workplace (snore). And there are more exciting names to come.
(iSeries Network) Financial analyst John Jones, managing director of SoundView Technology Group, reported last week that IBM's 2003 first-quarter revenues could be hurt by the war on Iraq. Of course, this could quickly change, but about 10 to 15 percent of Big Blue sales typically come in the last two weeks of the quarter. And if companies aren't buying because of uncertainty. . . .
(eWeek) In an attempt to quell criticism over its complex software and long installation process, Siebel Systems is readying a more basic package of its CRM applications that contains fewer features and simplified default business rules. The new offering, to be rolled out late this year, sounds like the Siebel version of IBM's Express family of products.
(eWeek) We reported last week that SCO Group is suing IBM for $1 billion for allegedly misappropriating SCO's Unix trade secrets. This week, according to the fictitious industry pundit Spencer F. Katt, the Linux faithful are up in arms about this move. Several Linux vendors partnering with SCO in the UnitedLinux consortium are being inundated with phone calls and e-mails demanding that they immediately sever all ties with SCO.
(CNET News.Com) Adam Osborne, whose successes and failures in pioneering the first portable computer (actually a 23-pound luggable) transformed him into one of Silicon Valley's great cautionary tales, is dead at age 64 after a long illness.
(iSeries Network) The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace is "an implementing component of the National Strategy for Homeland Security," whose purpose is to "engage and empower Americans to secure the portions of cyberspace that they own, operate, control, or with which they interact." According to a recent article and three iSeries experts, iSeries users have a leg up on this initiative, as security becomes an increasingly important strategic component of the IT budget.
(ZDNet) South Africa's Advertising Standards Authority recently ordered Microsoft to withdraw its "unsubstantiated and misleading" print commercial, claiming that "its software is so secure, it will make hackers extinct." After you finish laughing, please move on to the next story.

(mrc) The white paper Bringing Your iSeries Legacy Applications to the Web provides a non-product-specific view of Web-enabling OS/400 applications for the Web.
(Perle Systems and Search400.com) The white paper Remote dial-in access and the iSeries: Making sense of your choices addresses the implications of open standards computing for iSeries remote dial-in users. It looks at iSeries-specific solutions, before focusing on today's more open and distributed approach to data retrieval. In the process, it also discusses TCP/IP as a universal protocol, the e-business revolution and the issues surrounding browser-based host access, VPN, and how to use a combined Web browser and Remote Access Server solution.
