Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(The Four Hundred) Here's something IBM and its reseller partners probably don't want to discuss in public. According to a Guild Companies report, IBM and its resellers are quietly asking customers who purchased equipment in the months before the January 20 revamping about potential compensation for having been kept in the dark about the radical nature of the change in pricing and packaging for the new iSeries. Big Blue might be preparing quiet rebates for these shops, and both big and small iSeries customers may be eligible for the deals.
(The Four Hundred) iSeries vendor Doug Bidwell of DLB Associates put forth a simple proposition this week: IBM and its vendors must make programs like J.D. Edwards' OneWorld and IBM's WebSphere perform better on the iSeries than on Windows, or the battle is lost. Bidwell explained that the price/performance equation is such that, in a bad economy, IBM needs to make the iSeries a better--and easier--choice, or customers will go with the less expensive alternative that offers many of the same advantages.
(iSeries Network) IBM launched a new WebSphere Studio WebLogic Edition plug-in this week that allows WebSphere Studio developers to create applications for BEA's WebLogic. The plug-in is intended for customers who have both WebSphere and WebLogic in their development environments.
(The 400 Group) Responding to customer requests, IBM has added new features to its iSeries Support Web site. The revamped site now contains more information on hardware planning, system problem diagnosis, and searching. The improvements are targeted at simplifying the process of getting support.
(iSeries Network) Frank Soltis predicts that, 10 years from now, we'll view the IT infrastructure more like a utility, where companies will configure for average workload and buy whatever else they need. And the iSeries already has many of the fundamentals in place to make that dream come true, which should help make it a key platform in IBM's on-demand revolution.
(iSeries Network) The Radicati Group market research firm recently released a report stating the total cost of ownership of IBM Lotus Notes/Domino 6 is less than two-thirds that of Microsoft Exchange. The report compared Domino 6, Exchange, Oracle Collaboration Suite, and Sun Microsystems' Sun One Communications Platform.
(The Four Hundred) Over the next five years, Microsoft's .NET and Sun Microsystems' Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) will emerge as the clear leaders for new enterprise application development, a Gartner analyst said at Gartner's recent IT expo in San Diego. However, J2EE will continue to have a leg up on .NET in market share, owing in large part to Microsoft's premature announcement of the .NET Framework a year ago.
(Information Week) IBM unveiled the TotalStorage FAStT600 midrange storage system this week, which is priced at $14,995 and offers up to three times the performance and throughput of its predecessor, the FAStT200. IBM is also offering small and midsized customers the type of extensive warranties it usually reserves for its larger customers. The FAStT600 is supported on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows, but if this is aimed at the SMB market, why isn't IBM supporting it on the iSeries yet?
(eWeek) A quartet of glitches in IBM's DB2 database software tripped up Denmark's largest bank in mid-March. IBM has created patches for the errors. The patches are being distributed by IBM customer service representatives, who are handling customers on a one-on-one basis.
(CNET News.com) The SETI@home project has released a new version of its software in order to plug a security flaw that could allow unauthorized access to PCs participating in the project. The fixed flaw is one of three vulnerabilities reported by a Dutch security researcher last December that became public only last weekend.
