Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) Several weeks ago, Guild Companies compared the new iSeries line with Unix servers from both IBM and Sun Microsystems, to give an idea of where the new iSeries stands. This week, Guild Companies compares the new iSeries with the Microsoft Windows platform, and in the process it has validated a trend that first started developing almost a decade ago: that, for a given OLTP workload, mainframes are twice as expensive as OS/400 and Unix servers, which are themselves twice as expensive as Wintel servers. But there are a few catches that make this analysis a little more complicated.
(Guild Companies) With 75 percent of OS/400 shops running Windows servers, the upcoming launch of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is almost as big an event as a new OS/400 release. And, given that the iSeries can run Windows servers in conjunction with OS/400--by using an Integrated xSeries Server (IxS) coprocessor or an external xSeries server that links to the iSeries through Integrated xSeries Adapter (IxA) cards--IBM Rochester just has to be in line for Windows 2003 support inside OS/400, doesn't it?
(iSeries Network) IBM's Scholars Program, which encompasses the popular Partners in Education initiative, is a great idea for several reasons: educational institutions get access to new iSeries technology and discounts on hardware and training; students get trained on one of the more widely used platforms; and sponsors get well-trained employees. But reality usually differs from theory, and now several educators have sounded off about the program, pointing out its shortfalls and suggesting ways to improve it.
(MC Press online) IBM plans to boost iSeries sales through comarketing campaigns it is launching with dozens of iSeries software vendors. These campaigns are part of a broader IBM initiative to forge partnerships with midmarket software vendors, including those who develop for non-IBM platforms.
(eWeek) PeopleSoft this week rolled out a new suite of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software intended to automate horizontal business processes for midsized customers. The new product, PeopleSoft MidMarket Solutions, has 13 modules and is offered in a fixed-pricing deal that includes unlimited user licenses, implementation services, and training.
(eWeek) Under new general manager Ambuj Goyal, IBM's Lotus Software division is moving toward Domino software with open Internet standards. Look for new Java-based functionality starting next month and continuing into Domino 6.5 and 7.0.
(Guild Companies) At IBM's developerWorks conference in New Orleans last week, Big Blue discussed two new initiatives designed to bring legacy environments into the present and to make self-healing autonomic computing technology a reality. Big Blue detailed its blueprint for autonomic computing, including tools based on the open standards that Big Blue will encourage its partners to use. In a separate announcement, new software and services were introduced that modernize "spaghetti code" running on mainframes and OS/400 servers.
(MC Press Online) If you just can't get enough of autonomic computing, here's another article about the autonomic computing blueprint and how it relates to high availability.
(iSeries Network) IBM has been pretty vocal about on-demand, or organic, computing, but a recent report from Forrester Research says other companies may be better positioned to realize that dream. This led to an article in which analysts from Forrester and Aberdeen Group sized up Big Blue's abilities versus the competition in a marketplace that doesn't quite exist yet.
(The 400 Group) In a short-but-interesting article, iSeries chief scientist Frank Soltis did a little thinking out loud about next year's iSeries announcements, when customers may be able to order an iSeries box without OS/400 installed. With the upcoming converged iSeries and pSeries servers, will it still be an iSeries box if OS/400 isn't loaded in the primary partition? And what would happen if that converged box fell down in a Forrester Research report and no one saw it?
(iSeries Network) At developerWorks Live in New Orleans last week, IBM announced several projects to amplify its many new marketing messaging, including plans for on-demand computing, integration offerings, runtime environments, and licensing programs.

(Guild Companies) A young company named Curl, which sells development tools for creating so-called "rich client" interfaces, says the time has come for regaining the functionality lost when developers moved from client/server architectures to Web browser interfaces. Considering that thousands of green-screen RPG applications were never upgraded to client/server in the first place, Curl hopes to help OS/400 developers leapfrog interface trends while preserving the RPG investment.

(Guild Companies) Patrick Townsend & Associates has announced Alliance AuthExpress, a scalable line of OS/400-based authorization and settlement packages. While the core AuthExpress application remains the same across the line, providing a smooth upgrade path, each offering is tuned and packaged differently to meet the volume, security, and connectivity requirements of small, midsized, and large businesses.
(InformationWeek) The former chief financial officer of software developer Peregrine Systems has pleaded guilty to securities fraud and conspiracy after agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors investigating accounting irregularities at the company.
(CNET News.com) Siebel Systems has released a new version of its software compatibility tool set as part of an initiative to make its CRM applications cheaper to install and maintain. Siebel Universal Application Network 2.0 consists of 100 separate applications that link Siebel sales, customer service, and marketing programs with inventory, billing, and other back-office programs.
(Guild Companies) Silvon has released new browser-based software called Stratum.iPlanner, a key infrastructure component of Silvon's Stratum suite of business intelligence software. The iPlanner has a special affinity for the company's Demand Forecasting & Planning offering, an application Silvon designed specifically for manufacturers and distributors that manage large numbers of stock keeping units (SKUs) or different products.
