Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) Market research firm Gartner monitors the health of and outlook for RPG, as it does for all major programming languages. Sadly, Gartner recently downgraded its RPG rating from the "mature" to the "aging" category. So what's an OS/400 shop to do? Guild Companies surveyed the landscape this week and offers its perspective.
(Guild Companies) This week, IBM revived several iSeries-based rebates that expired late last year and were responsible for driving a certain amount of sales. These rebates, rather than straight discounts on the iSeries hardware itself, are tied to auxiliary hardware and software that many iSeries customers typically buy as part of a new iSeries acquisition or upgrade. While no single rebate has a high dollar value, together they can shave a few points off a lot of deals.
(MC Press Online) In another take on IBM's rebate revival, it was also noted that, although the rebates don't result in significant savings, Big Blue is using them as sweetners to entice customers into the areas it wants them to invest in: Windows, Linux, Lotus, and WebSphere.
(iSeries Network) Next month, IBM is scheduled to release Lotus Workplace Messaging, a light-function, high-performance, browser-based e-mail solution that provides a subset of Lotus Domino functionality. Workplace Messaging isn't intended to replace Domino. Its purpose is to provide e-mail functions to employees who wouldn't normally have access to e-mail, such as warehouse or shop-floor workers.
(Instant Messaging Planet) Lotus Notes Domino 6.5, which is currently in beta and scheduled for shipment in the third quarter, embeds more presence and awareness technology from Lotus Instant Messaging (also known as Lotus Sametime). Because of this, Version 6.5 may eliminate the need to have both the Notes client and the Sametime client running on the same machine.
(Guild Companies) IBM recently increased its ISV funding and is providing incentives to help its software vendors, Big Blue's crucial allies in the war against Microsoft, modernize their applications. Much of the iSeries-based, third-party software--particularly in niche industries--lacks modern, Web-enabled user interfaces, and IBM's new programs should help them get it. It's too early to know whether the ISVs will be able to sell solutions that result in new iSeries customers, but IBM's involvement is a major improvement.
(iSeries Network) OS/400 security experts have repeatedly observed that iSeries and AS/400 shops think their systems are more secure than they really are because of the great security features provided by OS/400. However, the experts caution that it's more important now than ever before not to take OS/400 security for granted.
(iSeries Network) Big Blue has more than doubled the number of patents of any other computer company and continues to receive the majority of approved patents each year. But the customer is the big winner here, because of IBM's access to cutting-edge technology.
(eWeek) The unemployment rate for computer software engineers in the first quarter of 2003 was 7.5 percent, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report also noted that computer hardware engineers had a 6.5 percent unemployment rate, and that the rate for computer programmers was 6.7 percent. These numbers are leading to more calls for a rollback of the H-1B visa quota to 65,000, which would be a 300 percent reduction from its current level of 195,000.
(CNET News.Com) At the company's annual meeting this week, IBM shareholders rejected a proposal to account for stock options as an expense, a proposal that was supported by pension fund investors, labor groups, former employees, and other dissidents. Shareholders also rejected an anti-takeover proposal for the adoption of poison-pill defensive tactics in the event of an unwanted corporate takeover.
(ZDNet UK) Rob Short, the Microsoft executive in charge of the Windows kernel code, admitted this week that more than one in four Windows NT 4 applications failed to run on Windows Server 2003. "We had a very high goal. . . ," said Short, "[the number that ran is] in the high 60 percent. It's not 90."

Vendor Announcements, Promotions, And Deals

(CNET News.Com) At the Networld+Interop conference in Las Vegas, Computer Associates threw its hat into the on-demand computing arena by outlining its plans for on-demand computing and explaining how Unicenter fits into those plans.
(Guild Companies) Candle's latest product, PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ, adds protection to sensitive messages sent across the WebSphere MQ middleware environment and is designed to create an environment of trust among trading partners who are increasingly relying on Web-based transactions in their daily business.
(Guild Companies) DataMirror began shipping a major new version of Transformation Server, its software for replicating data between major database management systems, this week. Transformation Server 5.1 includes a Java-based interface, giving administrators a dashboard-like view of the current state of data replication occurring across a network, and a redesigned communications layer that brings a single API and a simpler method for accessing data on all supported platforms.
(Guild Companies) GROUP Technologies recently equipped its securiQ.Wall anti-spam software with new content-recognition technology that, the company says, adapts to new forms of spam better than prevailing methods. The new version, which supports IBM Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange e-mail servers, begins shipping next month.
(Guild Companies) JBM Systems has introduced a new version of its inexpensive OctoPDF printer-conversion software that includes new encryption, watermark, and distribution features. JBM Systems also has introduced a companion product to OctoPDF, called OctoBurst, which allows companies to perform "report bursting," or splitting of large reports into smaller segments based on specified control breaks.
(Guild Companies) Kisco Information Systems announced new software last week called QRYTool/400, designed to keep AS/400 and iSeries queries running smoothly after a database change has been made. QRYTool/400 helps users find important Query/400 information, so queries can be updated and made to work properly with the changed database.

New Redbooks, White Papers, and Other OS/400 Resources

(ASC) White Paper -- FTP SSL with Esend is an overview of how to use FTP via Secure Sockets Layer on a V5R2 iSeries box. The paper includes relevant links to IBM documentation that walks you step by step through the process.
(IBM) Here's how to (legally) print multiple copies of IBM Redbooks or make them available to multiple users on an enterprise or intranet server. IBM put up a Web page explaining the limits of Redbook reproduction and how to request permission online to reproduce a Redbook.
(MIDRANGE dot COM) This Web site, run by David Gibbs, features a variety of resources, but most people go there for the mailing lists. The lists attract a knowledgeable array of OS/400 experts and cover more than 20 OS/400-related topics. There's also a list archive, FAQs, opinions, and midrange resources presented in a Yahoo-style format.
(Search400.com) The Autonomic Computing on iSeries Learning Guide combines a number of resources to help customers understand IBM's new paradigm for server management, and all of these features are iSeries-specific, so you can see how these ideas apply to and are implemented on everyone's favorite black box.
