Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) In spite of a persistent buzz that IBM will soon withdraw SNA support from OS/400, Guild Companies reported this week that the rumors are not true. But that doesn't mean you won't have to deal with issues surrounding SNA. You do. From Client Access to Virtual LANs, SNA support is disappearing from recent versions of OS/400, and it's unclear how IBM will repackage SNA support in the future.
(The 400 Group) This article recaps IBM's announcement on the new iSeries Model 810 and improved iSeries upgrade paths.
(Guild Companies) Symantec announced the immediate availability of the Symantec Enterprise Firewall for the iSeries Model 270, a virtual firewall appliance that runs on a "hardened" version of Linux inside a dedicated logical partition. Certification tests for running the firewall on additional iSeries servers are currently underway.
(InternetWeek) IBM launched a software offensive this week with several new products, including a low-cost e-mail server, DB2 Information Integrator, and a number of new Rational software tools. This move underscores IBM's "continued march into higher profit-margin software and services," an effort that has been fueled by at least eight acquisitions in the past 18 months.
(iSeries Network) Out of the ashes of the old Trusted Computing Platform Alliance, the Trusted Computing Group has been formed. Its goals are to create open standards that can be adopted for use across the entire spectrum of computing, including PCs, PDAs, servers, and digital phones, and to enable secure and trusted computing that can protect data, privacy, and individual rights. And this broadened support should include the iSeries.
(iSeries Network) With the buzz about grid computing, iSeries Network rounded up some of the usual iSeries expert analysts--including representatives from Aberdeen Group, Forrester Research, and IBM's emerging business opportunities unit, as well as the ever-present Tom Bittman of Gartner Group--to discuss opportunities and possible iSeries grid futures.
(Guild Companies) IBM recently acquired Think Dynamics, a Toronto company that designed and sells a tool called ThinkControl. Based on Java and Web services standards, ThinkControl creates a pool of IT resources that can be dynamically allocated to applications based on policies set by business managers. The product will function under IBM's Tivoli branding, and IBM is expected to continue to sell it as stand-alone product.
(MC Press Online) At a plush conference in Palisades, New York, IBM provided analysts with an inside look at how it is transforming its On Demand strategy from marketing statements into real-world IT solutions.
(Guild Companies) SCO sued IBM in March for $1 billion, charging that Big Blue had willfully distributed Unix to the Linux community and had undermined the Unix market with anti-competitive practices. Last week, SCO tried to freak out the Linux community by saying that it would stop selling its own Linux and it warned all Linux users that legal liability might fall on them as well as IBM.
(eWeek) In another front in the Linux war, Open Source Initiative has updated its stinging attack against SCO Group, and has addressed a wide range of SCO's lawsuit claims against IBM and SCO's claim to ownership of Unix source code.
(Guild Companies) In the weirdest SCO Group news of the week, the company licensed its Unix technology to Microsoft. Talk about strange bedfellows.
(eWeek) As the national threat level was increased to orange alert on Tuesday, the Pentagon changed the name of its mammoth electronic surveillance project from Total Information Awareness to Terrorism Information Awareness. But concerns are strong that the project will invade individual privacy without necessarily improving national security.

(InternetWeek) IBM unveiled its WebSphere Business Integration portfolio, designed to make it easier for companies in specific industries to their automate business processes.
(IBM) Here's the announcement letter for WebSphere Business Integration Event Broker and Message Broker 5.0. The product doesn't run natively on the iSeries but uses the Integrated xSeries Server to host it on an OS/400-based box.

(CNET News.Com) EMC announced two new options for its CX200 model, the low-end member of its midrange storage line. The company has also made enhancements to its management software.
(Guild Companies) inFORM Decisions announced iMap, a new feature that should make it easier for AS/400 and iSeries shops to use the company's electronic document management software. iMap is a graphical data-mapping tool that works with the Windows-based design component of inFORM's iDocs suite to link OS/400 spool file data to fields in the new electronic form. The company says the new drag-and-drop method is a great improvement over the cumbersome multi-step processes previously used.
