Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(Guild Companies) DB2 Sales on the iSeries accounted for $325 million in revenue in 2002, according to market researcher Gartner. That number represents a decline of roughly $103 million, or 24 percent, compared to 2001, when new DB2/400 sales brought in $428 million. On the other hand, RDBMS sales on IBM's S/390 and zSeries mainframes grew by about 13 percent--roughly $92 million--to about $800 million, according to Gartner.
(iSeries Network) iSeries Capacity Upgrade on Demand has been a hit with customers, according to several industry experts. In fact, the ever-quoted Tom Bittman, vice president and research director for Gartner, predicts that in two years customers will expect all servers to be shipped with CUoD, and the iSeries could be at the head of the pack.
(iSeries Network) In the past, the COMMON users group has been criticized for picking lackluster locations, like Minneapolis and Indianapolis, for its biannual conferences. This fall, COMMON feels it has a sure-fire winner with its upcoming conference in Orlando, Florida, a location that COMMON is planning to capitalize on with seldom-seen location-based tie-ins.
(MC Press Online) IBM announced several new products and enhancements on May 13, with the highlights being a new entry-level Model 810 and a discounted prepay option for Capacity Upgrade on Demand.
(The 400 Group) IBM Rochester is opening new opportunities for small and midsized shops with its new entry-level iSeries server in the Model 810 line.
(e-Pro Magazine) IBM Lotus is expected to release two new additions to IBM's Express software line next month, alongside its new Lotus Domino 6.0.2 upgrade. The Domino Collaboration Bundle Express will combine Domino Server with a choice of the Notes client or Domino Web Access (formerly known as iNotes) for collaborative and e-mail applications. The Domino Utility Server will provide access to collaborative applications through either a Notes client or a Web browser.
(Internetnews.com) IBM is expected to release DB2 Express in June. DB2 Express is a smaller version of its flagship database software, for small and midsized business environments.
(Guild Companies) If you've been in the IT industry long enough, you've survived corporate moves, acquisitions, downsizing, right-sizing, outsourcing, and leaving the dot-com era to find a real job. After all that, you now have to cope with offshoring, where companies in established Western economies move professionals and service jobs to other countries where labor is cheaper and technology can easily link them back to the home market. Some call it colonialism, but it's also a mounting reality.
(iSeries Network) SCO Group is standing behind statements made by its senior management last week that Linux users may have to pay if SCO wins its lawsuit contending that Linux improperly includes Unix code.
(MC Press Online) On May 14, SCO Group pulled out of the UnitedLinux consortium, abandoning its Linux business in the process. Later, Microsoft announced an agreement to license Unix from SCO. What's happening here, and why are these events causing people to become flustered and nervous?
(eWeek) To muddy the Unix and Linux waters even more, Novell, which once owned the rights to Unix, this week publicly challenged SCO's assertion that it owns the rights and patents to Unix System V.
(News.com) A German lobbying association called Linuxtag said it may seek a court order against SCO Group this week because of threats made against 1,500 of the world's most important Linux supporters, including IBM.
