Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) With a totally revamped and repriced iSeries product line, you would think that IBM would be eager to demonstrate the iSeries' power and value when running various IT industry benchmark workloads. Unfortunately, IBM has not been very active with iSeries benchmarks, and now the lack of good benchmark data is hampering the ability of the iSeries platform to gain new customers and to retain the ones it has.
(iSeries Network) PeopleSoft announced it is buying iSeries mega-vendor J.D. Edwards, in a deal valued at $1.7 billion. After the deal closes, PeopleSoft will have an enterprise unit, a midmarket unit, and an AS/400 unit. The deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies, should be finalized in the late-third or early-fourth quarter, pending regulatory approval.
(SearchCRM.Com) PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards are still sketching out the product roadmap for their just-announced acquisition. To fill in some gaps, SearchCRM.Com interviewed Nanci Caldwell, chief marketing officer for PeopleSoft, to get an idea of how the merger will unfold.
(eWeek) An investment group lead by General Atlantic Partners and Cerberus Capital Management announced that it is buying enterprise software developer Baan from Invensys for $135 million. The group plans to combine Baan with fellow ERP software company SSA Global Technologies, to make it the fourth-largest enterprise software developer (PeopleSoft, upon purchasing J.D. Edwards, will become the second-largest developer).
(Guild Companies) IBM this week started shipping a new version of its Web-to-host software that gives OS/400 shops a decent price break, as long as they don't need to connect to other types of servers. WebSphere Host Integration Solution for iSeries 3.1 is a collection of tools for transforming 5250 screens into HTML. Companies that only need Web access to 5250 applications can now obtain this capability from IBM for between about $200 and $300 per user, about $100 less than the full multiplatform version.
(iSeries Network) IBM's new WebSphere-based Lotus Workplace Messaging software will be priced at an inexpensive $29 per person for first-year licensing fees and a maintenance contract. From the second year on, IBM Lotus will charge a maintenance fee of $5.80 per person.
(Guild Companies) There always has been talk about converging IBM's various eServer product lines into a penultimate or final eServer machine. This has understandably unnerved certain factions, and, with the rumors circulating yet again, people are trying to suss out what impact such a convergence would have on the beloved OS/400 platform. To do that, however, requires that you understand the case for eServer convergence.
(iSeries Server) The H-1B visa program always has been controversial, because the government allows up to 195,000 lower-paid "guest workers" to enter the country to work in IT on three-to-six-year visas. Now the spotlight is turning to L-1 visas, under which companies can transfer IT workers from their subsidiaries in foreign countries to the United States.
(MC Press Online) A recent report from the Information Technology Association of America says that IT employment among women and minorities still lags behind other occupations, though the trend may be improving in a few key areas.
(CNET News.com) Forrester Research is trimming its technology-spending forecast for 2003, saying that high-tech and manufacturing sectors are reining in spending.
(CNET News.com) Gartner has recommended that customers minimize their use of Linux on important systems because of questions resulting from SCO Group's warnings about legal liability.
(InternetWeek) SCO Group executives said the company could take legal action against Novell as a result of Novell's claims that it owns Unix intellectual property rights claimed by SCO. SCO also said it will release proprietary code that has been copied into the Linux operating system, code that proves SCO's claims that the Linux kernel contains programming covered by SCO's Unix patents.
(CNET News.com) After warning companies that Linux could get them into legal trouble, SCO Group has shut down its German Web site because a Linux advocacy group obtained a restraining order from the German courts.
(CNET News.com) Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer identified Linux and open-source software as key competitive challenges to the company, in a memo sent to all employees Wednesday. Ballmer also acknowledged some recent Microsoft stumbles, including clumsy implementation of a controversial new licensing plan for business customers.

(Guild Companies) eStorage says data-transfer speeds have more than doubled for its Sony AIT-3 tape subsystem connected to iSeries servers. The company says it has clocked transfer speeds in excess of 110 GB per hour with its new 9192 single-drive AIT-3 tape subsystem, thanks to new tape-emulation software that is embedded in the device, instead of residing on an external controller card.
(CNET News.com) IBM announced that the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating certain transactions at IBM. The SEC is seeking information about how IBM recognized certain revenue and is concentrating on certain transactions in 2000 and 2001. The investigation may be centering on the company's Point of Sale retail systems.
(Guild Companies) iWay Software replaced its flagship product, Enterprise Integration Suite 2002, with a new release, called iWay Software Version 5.5, which features numerous enhancements, like new support for XML, Java messaging, open standards, and a new GUI for managing the company's stable of iWay adapters, now numbering more than 250.
(Guild Companies) iSeries change-management vendor MKS announced several software releases that the company predicts will benefit projects in which application-development controls are being tightened. The releases--Source Integrity Enterprise Edition 8.4, Integrity Manager 4.5, and Implementer 5.4--come from what MKS calls the MKS Integrity Solution for enterprise software configuration management.
(Guild Companies) SEAGULL introduced LegaSuite Web Services Studio, a new XML-based product that provides a visual drag-and-drop environment for cataloging business processes, modeling new workflows, and generating the GUI and the application code to execute those processes as a Microsoft ASP.NET application. (The 400 Group) "Gotcha: Implementing Logical Partitions" is a nice little article that provides several good tips for implementing logical partitioning (LPAR) on an iSeries or AS/400 system. There are also some good tips for adding an IOP to a shared bus.
