Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(Guild Companies) It's not every day that a new company enters the iSeries hardware market to take on IBM in its virtually captive installed base, but the midrange got a new storage vendor this week, Global Storage Technologies. GST is providing only sketchy details on its product plans, but has said it will focus on storage products for IBM's iSeries, pSeries, and xSeries lines, concentrating first on tape subsystems, autoloaders, and libraries.
(The 400 Group) IBM announced the latest generation of iSeries hardware six months ago, giving Model 7XX customers who will lose their upgrade paths in October a lot to think about. However, both timing and pricing have caused many these customers to rethink their upgrade--or worse, from IBM's point of view--to question whether they need to upgrade at all.
(iSeries Network) IBM's announcement that it will support DB2 Version 8 running in an iSeries Linux partition hasn't made a lot of shockwaves in the industry. For those who are wondering why, this article provides an analysis.
(Guild Companies) PeopleSoft last week announced it will acquire rival enterprise software maker J.D. Edwards for $1.7 billion in stock. The merger vaults PeopleSoft over former number-two, Oracle, but PeopleSoft will still be considerably behind number-one, SAP AG, which booked about $8.7 billion in revenues in 2002. That is unless Oracle doesn't scuttle the whole deal with its $5.1 billion, all-cash, hostile takeover of PeopleSoft.
(iSeries Network) Analysts say that if Oracle successfully acquires PeopleSoft, the deal could squash PeopleSoft's plan to acquire J.D. Edwards. For the iSeries community, however, either scenario could force some major changes upon the J.D. Edwards installed base, since neither Oracle nor PeopleSoft supports the iSeries platform.
(CNET News.com) Oracle's hostile takeover for PeopleSoft will expire on July 7, but Oracle expects to extend the offer, according to the formal offer Oracle filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. There are lots of other tidbits in this article, including Oracle's quote that it intends to "discontinue" the sale of PeopleSoft products to new customers and the revelation that Oracle can back out of the bid if another rival appears. Other potential PeopleSoft buyers include IBM, Microsoft, and SAP.
(CNET News.com) SAP launched a global ad campaign yesterday that focused on luring away PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards customers who are unnerved by Oracle's hostile-takeover bid for PeopleSoft.
(Guild Companies) SSA Global Technologies is buying Baan, the struggling Dutch subsidiary of British electronics giant Invensys. Invensys agreed to a $135 million sale of the company to Cerebrus Group and General Atlantic Partners, the two investment firms that own SSA GT and fund its growth.
(iSeries Network) IBM announced on June 2 that it is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. This article quotes several industry analysts, IBM business partners, and IBM itself on what this move means to Big Blue and its customers.
(MC Press Online) Rumors had been circulating for several days that The SCO Group might settle its Linux differences with IBM if the computer giant offered to buy the ailing software company. That's just one of the bizarre turns taken last week as a result of SCO's $1 billion lawsuit against IBM, for allegedly stealing SCO's Unix intellectual property.
(eWeek) Some members of the open-source community are now claiming that The SCO Group has violated the terms of its GNU GPL (general public license) by incorporating parts of the Linux kernel code into the Unix System V source tree.

Vendor Announcements, Promotions, And Deals
(Guild Companies) BluePhoenix Solutions recently launched a remediation tool, called UPCEnabler, which analyzes a company's application source code and makes changes necessary to bring it into compliance with the new 8-, 13-, and 14-digit product code standards introduced by the Universal Code Council.
(Guild Companies) Brooks Internet Software released INTELLIscribe Version 3.0.0.13, which eliminates the need for a network print server. In addition to providing an economical alternative to centralized spooling, it frees system resources and provides greater printing control than network servers.
(Guild Companies) Cardiff Software's LiquidOffice system--a Web-based e-form management system for creating, deploying, and automatically managing the routing, tracking, and approval of electronic forms--now integrates with IBM's Content Manager for iSeries and Content Manager for Multiplatforms products.
(eWeek) IBM introduced 11 new WebSphere Integration Adapters on Tuesday. These adapters, expected to become available in July, will focus on four industry segments: automotive, energy and utilities, healthcare, and electronics.
(Guild Companies) Jacada launched a new version of its Jacada Interface Server Web-to-Host product for iSeries servers and zSeries mainframes last week. The latest version of Jacada Interface Server, Version 8.0, has several new features, but its most important addition may be the product's improved feature-rich XHTML GUI.
(Internet Week) Despite Oracle's hostile-takeover bid for PeopleSoft, J.D. Edwards this week discussed several enhancements to its CRM suite, slated for a third-quarter release. SAP is expected to announce enhancements to its own CRM product suite next week.
(TechWeb) IBM and J.D. Edwards announced new hosted business applications for small and midsized companies in the automobile industry.
(Guild Companies) PKWARE teamed with RSA Security earlier this year to add support for up to 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) password-based encryption to PKWARE's PKZIP Professional products for Windows, Linux, Unix, OS/400, and MVS. PKWARE feels sufficiently comfortable with the new encryption capabilities of PKZIP that it is now handing the new capability to the public.
(eWeek) At the Java One show in San Francisco, SAP announced Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) support. The company also released a new Java development environment.
(CNET News.com) Siebel Systems shareholders have rejected a proposal that would have required executive compensation to be linked to performance. It also nixed a proposal that would have required the software maker to expense options.
