Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) IBM announced a new iSeries test last week called the three-in-one benchmark, which illustrates the multiple workload capability of the OS/400 platform. This test combines an ERP-like benchmark called the Business Object Benchmark for Java with a set of IBM Lotus groupware software and a Web storefront, all running on the same iSeries machine. Although it's a one-off benchmark, if the iSeries channel reacts positively and sells more iSeries iron, IBM may champion the test further and may even run direct comparisons with other platforms.
(Guild Companies) The SCO Group's lawsuit against IBM for alleged illegal appropriation of its Unix intellectual properties and code could be trouble for anyone buying IBM products, including iSeries customers. On Monday, SCO filed an amendment to its complaint, calling for a permanent injunction requiring IBM to stop all use and distribution of AIX and to destroy or return all copies of Unix System V source code. This move could easily spill over into IBM's other eServer lines, as z/OS and OS/390 contain enough APIs and functionality that they could be branded as a Unix variant; the AS/400 and iSeries have the AIX runtime environment, which allows AIX applications to run virtually unchanged on OS/400 machines; and IBM's middleware and database sales are increasingly dependent on Unix, Windows, and Linux platforms.
(Guild Companies) IBM and Hewlett-Packard must have had a few thrills recently as IDC, and then Gartner's Dataquest unit, revealed their first quarter 2003 revenue and market share estimates. It's hard to say how the iSeries fits into these numbers, because IBM never provides figures on iSeries sales. But if you read to the bottom of this article, you'll find that the iSeries controls about 3 percent of the overall server market. There's also an interesting prediction from Merrill Lynch about where the iSeries will land in the second quarter.
(The 400 Group) Industry analyst Tom Bittman says a successful Oracle takeover of PeopleSoft could have "grave effects" for iSeries customers because Oracle doesn't see a future in iSeries products. As a result, an Oracle takeover would probably doom OneWorld for iSeries. But it's not necessarily rosier if PeopleSoft buys J.D. Edwards, because PeopleSoft has declined to make a long-term statement of support for J.D. Edwards products for the iSeries.
(CNET News.com) Another party is heard from in the Oracle-PeopleSoft deal, as Connecticut's attorney general has announced that he is filing an anti-trust lawsuit against Oracle, seeking to defeat its PeopleSoft buyout.
(Lotus Advisor) IBM's Lotus division is scheduled to release the Lotus Domino 6.0.1 Critical Fixpack 2 this week, which fixes 20 problems with Domino. IBM is also withholding the next maintenance release of Domino 6 (Domino 6.0.2) and will instead release another critical fixpack, Domino 6.0.2 CF1, by July.
(iSeries Network) iSeries storage veteran and former owner of BCC Technologies Dave Breisacher has launched a new company called Global Storage Technologies. The company is preparing to launch storage products for the iSeries, xSeries, and pSeries product lines, starting with an internal mounted tape drive for the iSeries.
(iSeries Network) IBM Global Services is rolling out a new business unit called e-Business Hosting, which provides "virtual server services" (outsourcing) for hosting several types of IBM and partner applications. Stuart Bean, director of e-Business Hosting, sat down for an interview this week to discuss IBM's plans in this area.
(MC Press Online) Palm and IBM recently announced that enterprise Java applications can now be run on the Palm Tungsten PDA, extending device capabilities into the realm of enterprise-level e-business. By licensing IBM's WebSphere Micro Environment, Palm now provides a tool for PDA enterprise integration with companies' databases and applications.
