Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) Big Blue is announcing a geared-down Model 870 iSeries machine that fills the product line gap between the Model 825 and the old Model 870. The new model 870 has five to eight processors and has 7,700 to 11,500 CPWs of power, which places it almost exactly between the two machines, in terms of capacity.
(iSeries Network) As IBM gives, it also takes. Big Blue announced that the iSeries Model 270 and older 8XX models--including the 820, 830, and 840--are on their way out. But Big Blue will be keeping the Model 250 as a "special use" box.
(Guild Companies) IBM reported a good second quarter last week, with overall sales of $21.6 billion (a 10.1 percent increase), net income of $1.7 billion, and earnings of 97 cents per share. But the interesting part is that IBM refers to the iSeries as an up-and-coming "profit engine" in this article, which may be good news for the OS/400 community.
(Guild Companies) Hewlett-Packard and J.D. Edwards will soon start delivering a prebundled, preintegrated JDE 5-on-ProLiant solution that runs on top of Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. Targeted at small and midsized shops with 50 to 150 ERP users--the traditional heart of the iSeries market--this alliance could have bigger repercussions in the OS/400 marketplace than the PeopleSoft-JDE merger.
(CNET News.com) IBM is powering up Linux software for the Power family of processors, which includes its iSeries and pSeries machines, by adding dozens of programmers to its Linux Technology Center. And Big Blue has plans to hire even more.
(iSeries Network) IBM announced WebSphere Application Server 5.0.2, which is scheduled to be available today. New features include intelligent traffic routing, a WebSphere Performance Advisor, and automatic backup clustering.
(eWeek) After announcing that its year-to-year revenues fell for the eighth straight quarter, CRM vendor Siebel said it will cut 9 percent of its workforce by the end of the third quarter.
(CNET News.com) In a recorded conference call, two IBM officials told colleagues around the world that Big Blue needed to accelerate the movement of white-collar jobs overseas, even if that move creates a backlash among politicians and its own employees. The executives recommended IBM move some of its jobs now done in the United States, including software design jobs, to India and other countries.
(ZDNet) Following its claim that Linux infringes on its Unix intellectual property, The SCO Group announced that it has been granted key Unix copyrights and will start a program to let companies that run Linux avoid litigation by paying licensing fees. The company said it plans to offer runtime, binary use licenses to all companies using Linux kernel Version 2.4 and later.
(Storage Pipeline) At CA World this week, Computer Associates demonstrated Sonar, the asset-management and business-mapping technology that forms the heart of CA's on-demand computing initiative.
(eWeek) Beating Wall Street estimates, Computer Associates posted a 6 percent rise in revenue, to $813 million, for the first fiscal quarter of 2004. The company also beat analyst estimates by posting earnings per share of 14 cents.
(CNET News.com) Saying that the proposed Oracle-PeopleSoft merger "…clearly violates federal anti-trust laws," the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative watchdog legal action group, asked the Department of Justice to stop the deal.

(Midrange Stuff) Developed in conjunction with iSoft, Patrick Townsend & Associates announced Alliance AS2 Integrator, an OS/400 implementation of the Application Statement 2 (AS2) technology. Based on iSoft's Commerce Suite, AS2 Integrator works with the iSeries Web server to securely send and receive EDI files over the Internet by using HTTP servers.
