Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) Last week, IBM announced a new iSeries Model 870 that filled a significant performance gap between the Model 825 and the Model 870. Big Blue also unveiled more goodies, including support enhancements, a native WebSphere Portal Express package for iSeries, and two future iSeries servers that are designed for low-cost disaster recovery and high availability clustering.
(Guild Companies) IBM temporarily upstaged both Intel and HP by revealing a new pSeries TPC benchmark that pushed the performance of a 32-way pSeries "Regatta-H" server to 763,898 TPM. That's good news for the pSeries, but it may also indicate the debut of Power4+ iSeries machines before the year is out.
(iSeries Network) Playing into IBM's strategy of wooing the small and midsized business (SMB) market, IDC released a study this week saying SMBs can save an average of $180,000 a year by consolidating Intel-based Linux and Windows environments onto an iSeries.
(Search400.com) Until September 30, IBM is offering a new payment plan called "Power to Choose" for a broad range of hardware, including iSeries, pSeries, and xSeries. Customers can choose either a lower payment and financing rate or they can defer all payments at no cost until 2004.
(Australian IT) IBM has a research team porting its OS/400 operating system to a Sony PlayStation (note: this is not a joke story). Of course, there's zippo chance OS/400 on PS2 will go commercial as the port is part of a joint project between IBM, Toshiba, and Sony to develop processors for entertainment and "other" applications.
(iSeries Network) Using IBM's clearly stated intention of moving thousands of white-collar jobs from the United States to India and other countries, unions like Alliance@IBM and the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WashTech) are using these statements as a rallying cry to get their message out. But it's an uphill battle and--even if they're starting to recruit in traditionally anti-union Rochester--it's not clear that unionization is the answer to the tech industry's problems.
(TechWeb) As part of its Express Portfolio initiative, IBM introduced a product lifecycle management (PLM) offering this week for its mid market customers.
(iSeries Network) With the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, Congress is requiring companies to perform annual audits of internal controls and financial reporting by July 2004. But how are these requirements affecting iSeries vendors?
(eWeek) Oracle Corp. has asked the Delaware Chancery Court to postpone, indefinitely, a hearing for its case against PeopleSoft Inc. By postponing the trial, Oracle is allegedly trying to prevent PeopleSoft from exercising its so-called poison pill defense, a stock-related maneuver that would seriously affect Oracle's ability to takeover PeopleSoft.
(Guild Companies) In a stock and cash deal valued at $142 million, business intelligence (BI) software companies Hyperion and Brio announced a merger last week could be an indicator of future iSeries BI directions.
(eWeek) In spite of the SCO Group's $3 billion lawsuit against IBM and threats that it could come after Linux suppliers and users, many Linux users have no intention of paying SCO for a UnixWare license that indemnifies them from legal liability for using the open source Linux system.
(ZDNet) Since the SCO Group launched its legal action against IBM for violating SCO Unix trade secrets, SCO's stock price has skyrocketed. As a result, several senior SCO Group executives have been dumping their personal stock holdings at a nice profit. And it's possible that future common stock offerings and existing options could dilute shareholder value for existing investors.
