Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(Guild Companies) For the past two years Big Blue has told you how cool it would be to put Linux in your IT plans. That's cool, as in realizing the interoperability of operating systems, databases, and middleware. Cool as in Blue Ice, which was rolled out on IBM's xSeries Intel-based servers in May 2002, and just this week became available on the two-way Model 810 and six-way Model 825 iSeries.
(Computerworld) Will midsized companies choose to outsource their ERP systems? Industry analysts say that executive skepticism about the value of in-house IT and the complexity of ERP may push ERP to become an outsourced commodity. The argument against outsourcing can be made by those who believe ERP is too mission-critical to farm out. Compelling arguments are made regarding the risks, and good examples are presented for both sides.
(Guild Companies) Now that The SCO Group has taken a quick breather from filing and threatening to file lawsuits, along comes Linux distributor Red Hat, picking up its own saber and waving it at SCO. Last week Red Hat not only filed suit against SCO but also set up a $1 million legal-defense fund for open-source developers. If you think SCO's attempt to extract $3 billion from IBM is equivalent to a king's ransom, imagine what hundreds of companies in the Linux community might want from SCO.
(ePro Magazine) According to a recent report from market researcher IDC, IBM Lotus still sits on top of the collaborative messaging world, based on market revenue. The report indicates that out of the total pool of money spent, Lotus snatched slightly more than 46 percent, while Microsoft raked in a bit more than 44 percent. In 2001, Lotus had 49 percent and Microsoft had 38 percent, so you can see the race is much closer than it once was.
(Guild Companies) You know about police SWAT teams, but how about CERTs (or computer emergency response teams)? A CERT alerts IT administrators of security vulnerabilities that could potentially cripple a company. It is done on a platform-specific basis, but until recently the iSeries was not included. Now, not only is the iSeries on the CERT radar screen, but you can view IBM's official response.
(iSeries Network) iSeries programming teams are a core business asset, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be giving your iSeries software a critical evaluation before trying to squeeze more life out of it. The bottom line is that modern organizations can't afford antiquated software. Identifying and improving your program assets should be a top priority.
(eWeek) When the L-1 visa program was put into action, the intent was to allow multinational companies to temporarily transfer employees with specialized skills from their foreign subsidiaries. What has happened, critics say, is that companies in the United States, which are not required to pay those foreign workers prevailing wages, have displaced long-time employees. Last week the Information Technology Association of America, during a hearing in Washington, released a paper that urges reform of the L-1 visa program and protection for the workers being put out of work.
(CRN) IBM's plans to support Linux clients with its Lotus e-mail and groupware is moving along ahead of schedule, according to IBM's general manager of e-business on demand, Irving Wladawsky-Berger. In this short interview Wladawsky-Berger also says he expects increased Linux adoption in areas such as mobile devices, data management products, and grid computing.
(CRN) Is Linux right for small and midsized business? According to vendors at LinuxWorld Expo, the answer is a resounding yes. IBM, for instance, is doubling the discount given to solution providers when they sell their applications and services to SMB customers in combination with IBM software on Linux. And, according to the research firm Gartner, approximately 17 percent of midsized businesses are using Linux, while another 28 percent are experimenting with it.
(CNET News.com) Joe Tucci, CEO of data storage giant EMC, said at the company's annual meeting that the future of EMC products will be to control and track data from its entry into a database, to the system where it is stored, until it is no longer needed. The recent purchase of backup and recovery software manufacturer Legato Systems is a major step forward in EMC's business plans, which are outlined in this article.

Vendor Announcements, Promotions, And Deals
(Guild Companies) Instant message alerts that notify iSeries administrators of pending events such as low disk space or inadequate response times are now available with the introduction of Sametime Event Monitor from IBM Lotus. Get it free, for the time being, from the alphaWorks Web site.
(Guild Companies) Warehouse management systems using OS/400-based ERP and radio frequency barcode scanning guns might want to hone in on the latest software suite from eBusiness Solutions Pro. The old problem of barcode guns being offline more often than not has been rectified, according to the manufacturer. That's why they call the new product Stay-Linked. They keep the guns online by running more of the software on the OS/400 server, instead of on a PC-based gateway or on the gun itself.
(iSeries Network) Lawson Software announced the acquisition of Numbercraft, a U.K.-based maker of business intelligence software for retailers and consumer packaged goods. Lawson officials say the acquired technology will enhance the analytical capabilities of Lawson's retail software.
(Guild Companies) One of the more popular OS/400 spool file archive and restoration utilities, Save Output Queue, by WorksRight Software, now has a few more bells and whistles. New features include such things as better performance while executing large restores and the capability to assign ownership of restored and duplicated spool files to the restoring or duplicating user.
(Guild Companies) EMC, the alternative to IBM when buying internal and external disk arrays, plans to start supporting iSeries with Fibre Channel in September. It also announced a new high-end array, rack-mount capability for its entry-level array, support for the iSCSI protocol, and new backup and replication utilities.
(IBM) Until December 31, you can receive eligible IBM Web-based implementation educational products at no charge (about a $1,000 value) when you buy a qualifying InfoPrint Designer for iSeries software license.
