Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) If it's the iSeries against the world in a battle of enterprise servers, how much should anyone be betting on the iSeries? Gartner says the iSeries is holding its own against the competitive platforms, but that hardly means it's in a leadership role. Will it continue to be competitive? Its position in Gartner's Magic Quadrant says a lot about that.
(Guild Companies) NetWare, an operating system with a genealogy that can be traced back to the days of the System/38, remains popular at OS/400 shops. How long will that popularity continue? OS/400 shops running NetWare are on a heightened alert since Novell bought open-source software maker Ximian. It has caused people to wonder whether this move into the Linux market is a signal that NetWare, and its related GroupWise groupware, will soon be put out to pasture.
(Guild Companies) Regulatory compliance. Those are two words that an IT manager does not want to see on the subject line of an incoming e-mail. But pretending it will go away is not an option. You can find yourself in hot water by remaining ignorant on this topic, and that's why Tim Kormos is getting the word out to OS/400 shops.
(iSeries Network) IBM's eServer Solutions marketing manager, John Quarantello, talks about the open-source Apache Tomcat Web application server, whose days are numbered. Quarantello says the support built around Tomcat will be discontinued when WebSphere Express has been enhanced to the point that Tomcat is unnecessary. That timeframe, he says, is in 2004 or beyond. (Online registration is required to view this article in its entirety.)
(CRN) With Red Hat now pointing its finger squarely at the chest of The SCO Group in the legal wrangling over Linux intellectual property, the exchange of words has become a bit more heated and decidedly less one-sided. This interview with Red Hat CEO Matthew Szulik turns up the flame, as he discusses Red Hat's recent actions and a few other open-source issues.
(iSeries Network) IBM has joined with Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, Tripwire, InstallShield, and RSA Security to form a partner-based initiative to support and market the File Signature Database (FSDB). David Bartlett, IBM's director of autonomic computing, says the iSeries development group will be involved in the process that includes delivering signatures for operating system files across all platforms. (Online registration is required to view this article in its entirety.)
(CRN) Oracle's offer to purchase PeopleSoft for $19.50 per share has been extended to September 19. In big numbers, this deal rounds out to approximately $7.5 billion. In a move that many thought would turn Oracle away, PeopleSoft purchased J.D. Edwards for $1.8 billion. However, Oracle shows no intention of going away.
(CRN) After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September, Peregrine Systems has announced a reorganization plan that outlines its product plans, introduces a new board of directors, and implements a compliance program with an emphasis on companywide processes and procedures. According to Peregrine CEO Gary Greenfield, the company is "proud to be the first enterprise software company to reorganize successfully under Chapter 11 as a public entity."

(Guild Companies) IBM says WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries Version 5.1--the latest release of its integrated development environment for creating Java- and Web-based applications for OS/400 servers--and the advanced edition of the tool will be available to Passport Advantage customers and WDSc users on September 23 (for electronic shipment or download). The physical version of the product will ship October 17.
(Guild Companies) Former IBMer Al Grega, now LANSA's director of business development, says Linux is better than OS/400 for Web server workloads. OS/400 is "overkill," Grega says, citing more functionality than is needed, plus the unnecessary database. LANSA's newest product, LANSA for the Web Edge Server, keeps OS/400-based data separate from the Web server.
(Guild Companies) O'Reilly Automotive downsized its 12 Mbps link to a 6 Mbps link and saved $32,400 per year after installing bandwidth boosters and byte-level data caching technology in an OS/400 high-availability environment, from Expand Networks.
(Search400) Developers working on grid and autonomic computing projects can find free code (90-day trial) by surfing over to IBM's alphaWorks Web site. There you will find on-demand application tools, including the new version of IBM's Emerging Technologies Toolkit.
(Search400) Also on the alphaWorks Web site is the expanded version of IBM Community Tools, a messaging client that allows users to instantly message with other users to locate subject matter experts, start discussions, and conduct surveys--all in real time.
