Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) IBM raised the curtain a bit on its forthcoming Power5 processor for the pSeries and the iSeries, at the Hot Chips conference at Stanford University last week. Big Blue divulged details such as the addition of simultaneous multithreading and some innovative power features that allow the chip to consume less electricity and to produce less heat. But what IBM didn't talk about were potential features such as increased clock speeds, extra database and networking acceleration, and the available flavors of its Squadron machines.
(iSeries Network) COMMON attendees are already preparing for the conference's "sound off" session, where customers air their concerns directly to IBM brass and get some answers. The iSeries Network talked to several customers and business partners--including PowerTech, Midrange Performance Group, ProHelp Systems, and Al Barsa, who traditionally throws out the first question--about what they might ask Big Blue about in the open forum.
(iSeries Network) IBM recently announced that Capacity Upgrade on Demand pricing will be extended to IBM software. This move ensures that customers being charged a daily rate for additional hardware processing power will be billed correctly. The daily rates apply to selected iSeries, pSeries, and zSeries software.
(CNET News.Com) Recently unsealed e-mail from Oracle executives outline some of the company's thoughts and strategies concerning its proposed hostile takeover of PeopleSoft, including Oracle's support plans for PeopleSoft products if the merger goes through.
(Internet Week) The SCO Group defended itself against criticism from the open source community this week, saying that Unix-based Linux code did indeed come from SCO's copyrighted version of Linux, not from earlier versions of Unix that were released into open source, as some Linux advocates have argued. SCO also said the General Public License (GPL) for releasing software into the open source community violates U.S. and international copyright law.
(Guild Companies) In a new report called "Linux Strategies and Solutions 2003: Linux Server Suppliers Contend for Leadership," D.H. Brown Associates discusses how the "fab four" of IT--IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Sun Microsystems--are trying to convince corporate IT departments that they are the best ones to meet their data-center and desktop Linux needs.
(eWeek) Open Text announced that it plans to buy German Web-content-management developer Gauss Interprise for $11 million. The deal adds Gauss' content-management and business-process-management solutions, as well as its ERP connectors for IBM's iSeries applications, to Open Text's Livelink integrated collaboration and content management product.
