Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) Even though it may be hard to believe, indications on both Wall Street and Main Street are that the economy might be staging a rebound after being stagnant for two and a half years. With a rebound will come a wary optimism that an uptick in IT spending is around the corner. But whether that optimism is warranted may be another story.
(CRN) According to a survey by executive search firm Christian & Timbers, 46 percent of senior executives at various public companies report that their companies are understaffed, but most also don't expect to do any serious hiring in the next year.
(Guild Companies) The fight between Microsoft and IBM over messaging and collaboration tools for small and midsized businesses is becoming more intense now that IBM Lotus has announced two Domino Express products and Microsoft is on the verge of releasing Exchange Server 2003. Pricing, particularly for licensing and service contracts, should be a big issue as Lotus attempts to woo Exchange customers as well as upgrade Domino customers who might be thinking about Exchange.
(Guild Companies) Bruce Perens, a defender and evangelist of the open-source community, has his hands on the presentation The SCO Group made at SCO Forum in Las Vegas. This presentation includes code snippets that SCO released to support its claim that IBM illegally used SCO's Unix code in its Linux implementation. Perens' opinion? "If this is the best SCO has to offer, they will lose."
(iSeries Network) A recent IDC report says Big Blue regained the number-one spot in the worldwide server market, with 30.4 percent market share. However, that doesn't necessarily bode well for the iSeries, as IDC expects OS/400 to generate $2.4 billion in revenue this year and then trail off to $1.7 billion by 2007.
(MC Press Online) IBM's Software Group issued an internal memorandum last month that spelled out a new policy for offering subcapacity pricing on a number of software packages-- including Domino, WebSphere, Tivoli, and DB2 products--that run on different IBM multiprocessor (n-way) servers. Several n-way iSeries servers may be covered, including all n-way Model 8xx boxes and all partitionable 7xx models.
(The 400 Group) While applying iSeries PTFs is a big job that should be done regularly, many shops defer the task because it's getting more difficult to get the fixes they need. This article discusses various PTF problems and offers advice on what customers can do to make PTF application easier.
(eWeek) In a move that could bolster the Java community against the Microsoft .NET architecture and development tools, Sun Microsystems indicated it might be willing to join IBM's Java Eclipse effort.
(CNET News.com) Meanwhile, the Eclipse open-source-tool consortium is planning changes that will make it more independent of founding father IBM.
(CNET News.com) The Linux waters may soon be muddied again, as The SCO Group is reportedly planning on sending invoices for Unix licensing fees to companies using Linux. The invoices could be sent this month.
