Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web
(Guild Companies) Speaking at the COMMON conference last week, iSeries General Manager Al Zollar said iSeries shipments are up 12 percent, iSeries revenues are up 12 percent, but aggregate capacity is up 40 percent. While this appears to be good news, a simple financial model could make you worry about whether there's an alligator swimming around the iSeries revenue stream and whether IBM isn't turning the iSeries market into a mirror image of the zSeries market.
(Guild Companies) There are three constants in life: death, taxes, and OS/400 enthusiasts grumbling that IBM doesn't do enough to push the box against alternatives. The opinions run strong on this issue, both inside and outside of IBM, and it was once again the central issue at COMMON.
(Guild Companies) In spite of impressive competition, IBM 3590-style and STK 9480 tape drives continue to be the drives of choice for high-end midrange shops. And Big Blue recently announced two additions to its 3590-style "Magstar" product line: the 3592-J1A tape drive and its companion 3592-J70 controller.
(iSeries Network) Some noteworthy events at last week's COMMON conference were Computer Associates' debut in the expo area, Innovatum's imaginative marketing of its DataThread software, the return of longtime iSeries vendor FAX USA to the expo floor, and a new career goal for iSeries expert and former IBMer Janet Krueger.
(iSeries Network) For the umpteenth time, Randall Munson walked away from COMMON with a Speaker of Excellence award. After the conference, Randall sat down for an interview to chat about what it takes to put on a great COMMON presentation.
(CRN) PeopleSoft CEO Craig Conway said the company was rebranding its J.D. Edwards' product lines as PeopleSoft EnterpriseOne, its primary line, and PeopleSoft World, which run on the AS/400 platform. He also announced a major upgrade to PeopleSoft EnterpriseOne, which includes 400 enhancements over 30 modules.
(eWeek) At its Connect customer conference this week, PeopleSoft executives detailed some upcoming technology integrations that have resulted from the company's purchase of J.D. Edwards. The company also discussed improvements in usability and applications management that are slated to become part of PeopleSoft's Total Ownership Experience initiative.
(eWeek) Boston security company Core Security Technologies has discovered two new vulnerabilities in IBM's DB2 database software. The vulnerabilities are in DB2 Version 7.2 on Linux systems running under the x86 or the S/390 architecture. IBM has developed packages to fix both flaws, and one of the fixes has already been temporarily posted.

(iSeries Network) In addition to the other announcements IBM touted at COMMON, Big Blue played up previously announced products, such as DB2 Content Manager OnDemand for iSeries and some recent WebSphere Studio team products.
(eWeek) IBM on Monday launched a new service to boost the use of radio frequency identification among retailers and manufacturers.
(Guild Companies) Midrange Performance Group is introducing a new version of its iSeries performance tracking and capacity planning tool, Performance Navigator, which helps OS/400 shops maximize their AS/400 or iSeries hardware investment. With Performance Navigator Version 9.0, MPG has enhanced the tool's capability to track and analyze the movement of on-demand-type workloads, such as logical partitioning, high availability, and backups.
(eWeek) Based on the strength of its NetWeaver integration software, SAP is trying to expand its identity beyond being strictly an applications provider to being a broad-based platform provider. Or so the company said at its TechEd developer conference in Walldorf, Germany.
(Guild Companies) RJS Software Systems announced Enterprise Fax Solution, which lets iSeries users generate and send text-based faxes from iSeries applications. It also lets PC users send faxes through PC-based print drivers, and integrates with third-party network-based applications via APIs.
(Guild Companies) Returning to basics, SPSS is readying a new release of its business intelligence software suite for OS/400 shops, which was previously called STRATEGY and which is now named the ShowCase Suite.
