Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) IBM recently gathered a number of journalists to talk about how the data center is changing. The main message was that IBM sees the future as a combination of scale-up SMP servers with mainframe-class features and scale-out blade servers, with grid middleware linking the two into a big, flexible infrastructure. The message was simple and consistent: grid plus blade plus mainframe. But can the iSeries fit into the equation, and does IBM have the will to use it?
(Guild Companies) If you read IBM's announcement letter on September 5, you might have thought that Big Blue raised prices on two entry iSeries Model 800 servers by $4,000. But it turns out that the price hike was a $4,000 misunderstanding, and it may not be as bad as it looks.
(iSeries Network) When pressed on the question of iSeries marketing at COMMON, IBM honchos continually reiterated that Big Blue is making a huge marketing investment in the iSeries. But the investment isn't in advertising or in consumer-directed promotion; IBM is putting its money into the sales channel, where it believes there is the greatest potential for a payoff. This news excites some vendors but depresses others.
(iSeries Network) IBM has been secretive about what to expect when the pSeries and iSeries lines converge, but iSeries chief scientist Frank Soltis dispelled a few rumors during the recent COMMON conference.
(CNET News.com) SSA Global Technologies discussed plans to merge about a dozen overlapping software programs into two main product lines. One line will focus on applications that run on Unix, including applications picked up from its recent acquisition of Baan. The second line will contain business systems that run on OS/400 servers.
(Computerworld) Although Baan was in dire straits before the SSA Global Technologies takeover in June, its new president is predicting that Baan will be profitable again in three months, thanks in part to layoffs. The company has also pushed back the launch of Gemini, its next-generation ERP product, from this month until the second quarter of next year.
(eWeek) Lawson Software announced that it has acquired Apexion Technologies, a company that provides healthcare-surgical-instrument and supply-tracking software. With the acquisition, Lawson hopes to better compete with PeopleSoft, the number-two ERP vendor, which has a partnership with Apexion. The deal, which is still subject to approval from shareholders, should be finalized within the next 45 days.
(Guild Companies) IDC recently awarded IBM the leadership position in revenue market share for the second quarter of 2003, and Gartner analysts seconded that conclusion by awarding Big Blue its own top spot for the quarter.
(InformationWeek) While the Pentagon has been running into opposition on plans to create a database called Terrorism Information Awareness that would be used to combat terrorism, a similar project, called Matrix, is quietly growing with the help of more than a dozen states and $12 million in federal funds.
(InfoWorld) If you are trying to figure out when, where, and why to use an integrated development environment in your shop, you might want to take a gander at this article.
