(Guild Companies) IBM's Global Services has debuted virtual server capacity on an hourly rental basis for corporate customers. The Virtual Server Services offering puts IBM in control of building the whole shebang, and the customer is charged on a metered basis. Processing capacity can be purchased on zSeries mainframes, and on iSeries midrange, pSeries midrange, and xSeries Intel-based servers.
(iSeries 400 Experts)  In an effort to more closely align its marketing initiatives with its business partners, IBM has created the Business Partner Marketing Advisory Council.
(iSeries Network) IBM soon will be beta-testing a new Trace Analyzer tool to pinpoint communication problems between an iSeries and another system. Big Blue is looking for beta-testers, so if you want to participate you can apply by sending the company an e-mail.
(iSeries Network) According to a notice on Oracle's Web site, the company is constructing a Developer's Release of Oracle 9i R2 Database for Power/Linux that is capable of running on Linux for iSeries and pSeries servers. And Oracle is also looking for people to join their beta program, which doesn't have a start date yet.
(Guild Companies) At PeopleSoft's Connect 2003 conference last month, PeopleSoft and former J.D. Edwards executives presented a roadmap for the future of their united EPS software suites. For iSeries and AS/400 strategy, practically all new development will be delivered through the OneWorld code base, which WorldSoftware customers will be encouraged to upgrade to.
(The Register) An ERP survey taken in Europe last month revealed that as many as 95 percent of PeopleSoft and Oracle customers do not want Oracle's takeover bid for PeopleSoft to succeed.
(New York Times) PeopleSoft raised its third-quarter-earnings forecast again this week, indicating to some analysts that an Oracle takeover is proving ever more unlikely.
(eWeek) The financial health of the ERP market may be looking up, as SAP released preliminary third-quarter revenues. The big news is that its license revenue outlook, considered a measure of momentum, may best even the most optimistic analyst expectations.
(eWeek) Siebel Systems CEO Tom Siebel laid out his company's "CRM for Everyone" strategy during his keynote address at Siebel User Week 2003. A key feature is the new Siebel CRM OnDemand hosted-application service, which Siebel announced last week with IBM.
(Guild Companies) NetManage will soon consolidate its two major legacy connectivity product lines, according to a company initiative announced Monday. As part of its new Host Access Platform branding strategy, the development component of OnWeb, NetManage's host integration solution, will become more like RUMBA, the company's widely used, but aging, line of terminal emulation software for OS/400 and mainframe hosts. NetManage plans to ship a new release of OnWeb next month.
(eWeek) IBM's Lotus software division plans to bring its messaging and collaboration platforms, the legacy Domino offering and emerging Workplace suite, into feature parity by 2005 in anticipation of merging them.
(InfoWorld) IBM, which continues to make a play for small and midsized businesses against Microsoft, announced it will expand its ISV Advantage program to include SMBs in a number of vertical industries, including retail, financial services, and manufacturing.
(iSeries Network) Al Zollar, general manager of IBM's iSeries Division, sat down to discuss where the platform is going and why the iSeries is still somewhat obscure.
(Guild Companies) IBM is planning on incorporating the hosted system model into its Partners in Education program in 2004, taking the heat off colleges with limited budgets for hardware. IBM is also reevaluating the program's curriculum to better meet the needs of colleges.
(Guild Companies) IBM has filed another set of counterclaims against The SCO Group, which is accusing Big Blue of breaching SCO's Unix contract and of leaking Unix content into the Linux 2.4 operating system. This came a day after Hewlett-Packard granted its Linux customers indemnity against license fees and possible legal fees sought by SCO in additional lawsuits against Linux users.

Vendor Announcements, Promotions, And Deals

(Midranger Server) Aldon Computer Group introduced Affiniti 4.0, the latest version of its Java-based software change management system. Affiniti was created to manage development of the new class of multiplatform e-business applications.
(CNET News.com) Three of Computer Associates' top finance executives have resigned following the preliminary results of an independent investigation into the company's books sales.
(The Register) EMC and IBM have completed a deal to exchange their system storage APIs, including future APIs based on the SMI-S standard. However the companies warn that full disclosure will take time. EMC will also license IBM programming interfaces for IBM mainframe-to-EMC high-end array communication.
(CNET News.com) Another HP executive has jumped ship to work for a rival. Howard Elias, formerly HP's senior vice president of business management and operations for the Enterprise Systems Group, will manage EMC's emerging business initiatives. Elias will also help to identify new growth opportunities in EMC's "information lifecycle management" areas.
(Guild Companies) HiT Software recently launched Ritmo 2.0, an updated version of its ADO.NET data provider, which comes in two flavors: regular and iSeries. With this release, Ritmo supports new data types and the double-byte character set, and features other enhancements aimed at improving performance.
(InformationWeek) iWay Software is acquiring Actional's adapter software business for an undisclosed amount. This move strengthens iWay's position in the middleware market, while Actional will now concentrate on its Web-services management software.
(CNET News.com) IBM has hired John Jackson as the new leader of its disaster-recovery-services unit. Jackson is a former Hewlett-Packard executive who spent less than four months at HP in a similar post.
(CRN) IBM's Lotus Software group is preparing software to help companies comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act for controlling financial data. Lotus Workplace for Business Controls and Reporting Version 1 will combine IBM content management with portal capabilities by using new code.
(eWeek) PeopleSoft announced that is has acquired JCIT International's Demand Flow software, at the 2003 APICS International Conference and Expo in Las Vegas.
(Guild Companies) PKWARE shipped new compression software Monday that allows OS/400 and mainframe shops to share large files (4 GB and up) with Windows and Unix shops. The company also announced it has filed a patent application for the process it uses to encrypt compressed files, in an attempt to "coax" other developers of ZIP compression software to settle on a single, standardized technique for applying strong encryption to the ZIP file format.
(eWeek) SAS Institute announced it has acquired Marketmax, a retail planning and merchandising intelligence software developer.
(eWeek) Siebel made a number of announcements at Siebel User Week 2003, including the new Siebel Business Integration Applications 3.0, new deployment options for the Universal Application Network, a new Siebel Smart Client that's being developed with Microsoft, and Siebel Application Suite 7.7.
(iSeries Network) SkyView Partners and Symbiont Healthcare Systems announced a strategic alliance to provide iSeries shops with standardized HIPAA gap analysis, security assessment, risk analysis, and monitoring services.
(CRN) Symbol Technologies launched the new MC9000-G handheld device, aimed at improving supply management capabilities, including inventory management, price checking, shipping/receiving, warehouse management, and baggage reconciliation.
(CRN) Symbol Technologies announced a slight upswing for its second quarter 2003 earnings. It also released its much-anticipated restated financial results for 1998 to 2002, results that slash Symbol's revenue for that period by $223 million.
(InternetWeek.com) WRQ will ship an upgrade to its Windows- and Web-based host access and PC-Unix integration software next week. WRQ Reflection 11.0 and Reflection for the Web 6.0 include wider enterprise technology support, as well as better management and performance capabilities.
