Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) IBM recently released an announcement letter that looked like it contained a $4,000 price increase on certain iSeries Model 800 servers. At the time, the increase seemed to be the result of a misunderstanding, and the press encouraged customers to fight it. This week, Guild Companies published an explanation for the increase, as well as instructions for getting around it by filling out a quotation form for a tape drive exemption.
(Guild Companies) Gartner analysts have issued an updated application server evaluation model that any prospective server buyer should take a gander at. Gartner has released several of these models in the past, but this time the model is different. This time, Gartner is ranking Linux servers against big SMP boxes, like the iSeries.
(iSeries Network) Tom Bittman, vice president and research director for Gartner, talked about iSeries sales numbers this week. But the numbers he's quoting don't exactly mesh with IBM's.
(iSeries Network) Oracle has, for the fourth time, extended its bid for PeopleSoft.
(CNET News.com) Oracle has submitted notification papers to the European Commission over its takeover bid for PeopleSoft. The commission now has 30 days to decide whether to allow the takeover or to seek a more in-depth review of the bid.
(TechWeb) Oracle announced it has reorganized its global marketing department. The company declined to confirm rumors that it has laid off employees, but sources close to the company confirmed that job losses were involved.
(TechWeb) At Citrix's annual iForum customer conference in Florida this week, SAP America President and CEO Bill McDermott said Oracle's attempt to swallow PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards is bad for customers. McDermott said, "We know Citrix, HP, and SAP will be around for a long time. I'm not sure about the other guys." Sounds like fighting words.
(Guild Companies) Commercial Linux distributor Red Hat recently provided a sneak preview of its upcoming Linux implementations for enterprise servers and workstations. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 is expected to ship within the next few weeks, but the big point is that the new Enterprise Linux 3 variants for servers, clusters, and workstations will use the same Linux code across different platforms, including 32-bit and 64-bit Intel computers, 64-bit AMD servers, and 64-bit IBM Power (iSeries and zSeries) platforms.
(CNET News.com) The SCO Group has backed off of a plan to invoice corporate users in order to prod them into buying SCO-provided licenses to use Linux.
(CNET News.com) IBM has announced its third quarter earnings, which met analysts' estimates. Big Blue said that it needs to add 10,000 new jobs next year. Let's hope these jobs aren't in India!
