Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) While sources say that IBM has a roadmap that extends at least into 2010 for Power-based iSeries servers on the Power7 platform, what we do know for sure is there will not be a January 2004 iSeries "surprise" (meaning don't look for a major announcement during the first quarter). If it looks like IBM's immediate plans for the iSeries for 2004 are not exactly clear, it's not because IBM doesn't know what it is doing. It just seems to be keeping secrets.
(Guild Companies) IBM is announcing another batch of so-called Express products and bundles that it is using to drive sales into small and midsized businesses. New offerings include WebSphere Business Integration Express, DB2 Content Manager Express, SurfAid Express, Life Sciences Express Portfolio Solutions for SAS, and Product Lifecycle Management-Express.
(Guild Companies) It's not often that you hear IBM VIPs talking about how wonderful the iSeries is. That's why it's important to highlight two announcements that Big Blue made last Friday concerning recent successes the iSeries has had in replacing the HP 3000 midrange server, which Hewlett-Packard stopped selling October 31.
(Guild Companies) Novell announced that it is purchasing SuSE Linux for $210 million. The deal, which is still subject to regulatory approval and the resolution of shareholder agreements, should close by the end of Novell's first fiscal quarter in January 2004.
(Guild Companies) Everyone is asking whether The SCO Group really going to take on the GNU General Public License in its $3 billion lawsuit against IBM. Or is its threat just a bluff? That's a good question, and one SCO did not answer when it filed an answer to IBM's amended complaints on the case last week.
(Cnet News.com) Oracle was in court this week, arguing that a lawsuit filed against it by PeopleSoft has no legal basis. PeopleSoft alleges that Oracle engaged in unfair business practices by attempting to disrupt its business through a buyout bid.
(Guild Companies) Rean Pretorius, a former chief executive officer of IDION Technology, the parent company of high-availability software vendor Vision Solutions, has quit the company. Pretorius became the vice president of sales for the Vision Solutions unit of IDION after the company acquired Vision in 2000. After leaving Vision, Pretorius sold all of his shares in IDION to Vision rival DataMirror, and has taken a job there. DataMirror now holds a 43 percent stake in IDION.
(Computerworld) Gerry Cohen, CEO of Information Builders, sat down last week to talk about the business intelligence market, outsourcing, and the current state of the company.
(Guild Companies) The U.S. Department of Commerce announced a 7.2 percent growth in gross domestic product for the third quarter. And because it's the midsized shops with revenue of $10 million to $100 million that are most likely to add people, many iSeries shops will benefit more from the increase than many of their other brethren in the IT industry.

The new software installs more quickly and is 50 percent cheaper than the unrestricted version.
(IBM) IBM's Software Maintenance After License Fee for iSeries discount has been extended to include Canada and Latin America. Under the offer, if IBM Software Maintenance for iSeries or IBM Software Subscription for iSeries coverage has lapsed for a period of less than 12 months, customers can receive a special discount ranging from 8 to 100 percent off the IBM Software Maintenance After License Fee for iSeries when coverage is reinstated.
(TechWeb) IBM unveiled a new program called IBM Workplace, a bundling of IBM offerings under which IBM, in exchange for a monthly fee per user, will manage the provisioning, operation, support, and maintenance for a whole range of "in the cubicle" hardware.
(CRN) InterSystems announced its Ensemble server software, marking the company's first venture into the enterprise application integration market. Ensemble incorporates functions of an integration server, application server, object database, and application development and management environment.
(Computerworld) SAP announced that in conjunction with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, it will beef up the Sarbanes-Oxley financial reporting compliance tools in its mySAP financials and mySAP ERP products. The new software is scheduled for release early next year.
(eWeek) SAP announced Version 6.0 of Enterprise Portal, which features upgraded collaboration functions, more language capabilities, and better multiplatform support.
(eWeek) Siebel Systems announced it has completed its acquisition of hosted CRM services provider UpShot Corp. The acquisition provides Siebel with UpShot's own hosted service, along with about 1,000 of UpShot's customers and 100 of the acquired company's employees.
(Guild Companies) SkyView Partner introduced Risk Assessor for OS/400 this week. The product is designed to give companies a greater understanding of the security risks present in their OS/400 servers. And it does it at a reasonable price of $3,500 per logical partition.
(CRN) Symbol Technologies reported a slight gain in third-quarter sales and earnings this year compared with the same quarter in 2002, which the company had included in a recent restatement that slashed 1998 through 2002 revenues by $223 million.
