Top OS/400 Stories from Around the Web

(Guild Companies) It appears IBM has a few surprises up its sleeve when it comes to future iSeries machines. IBM may be readying rack-mounted iSeries machines and huge 64-way Squadron Power5 boxes that might be painted purple. On the down side, iSeries customers may not see any OS/400 blade servers before 2006.
(Guild Companies) Novell is buying commercial Linux distributor SuSE for $210 million in cash. IBM is also ponying up $50 million for Novell preferred stock to help SuSE and Novell support Big Blue's eServer product line. And anyone who says this deal doesn't resume the big battle between Microsoft and Novell is either stupid or lying.
(iSeries Network) According to a recent iSeries Network survey, 42 percent of iSeries shops expect their budgets will increase in 2004, while 24 percent are expecting cutbacks.
(iSeries Network) Vendors who are part of IBM's recently formed Business Partner Advisory Council are reporting the council has been successful so far in influencing Big Blue to change policies associated with its business partners. And a lot of what has been discussed so far will be formally introduced at IBM's PartnerWorld conference in February.
(Computerworld) SAP is dropping its European Sapphire user conference exhibition, opting instead for a string of local forums. The U.S. Sapphire show in May will serve as the annual user conference, and SAP will continue to hold a Sapphire event--but not a conference--in Japan.
(CRN) PeopleSoft enhanced its Customer Assurance Plan, which provides for customer license fee refunds in the event that Oracle, or anyone else, buys PeopleSoft and kills off the company's products. Oracle was not impressed, calling the action "management entrenchment at its worst" and citing PeopleSoft's "blatant disregard for shareholder value and choice."
(eWeek) Oracle also moved to quash online rumors by stating that the company has no intention of stepping away from its $7.3 hostile takeover bid for PeopleSoft.
(CNET News.com) SCO says it has issued subpoenas targeting six high-profile individuals or organizations--including Linux creator Linus Torvalds, Novell executives, and people from the Free Software Foundation, Open Source Development Labs, and Transmeta--for information in connection with SCO's lawsuit against IBM alleging that Big Blue illegally appropriated SCO's Unix source code into the Linux kernel. IBM in turn has issued subpoenas of its own to four companies.
(CRN) EMC senior vice president Mark Sorenson was recently interviewed about EMC's Legato and Documentum acquisitions and how they fit into the company's information life-cycle vision.
(CNET News.com) IBM CEO Sam Palmisano told a group of customers that IBM's on-demand effort for business transformation through technology has moved from abstraction to reality. But the question still remains: How much time is Big Blue taking to explain the idea to customers?
(CRN) At the Linux Desktop Consortium conference, IBM Global Services said it is moving ahead with a global support program for the Linux desktop. This program is scheduled to debut within one year.
