(Guild Companies) IBM's Power5 iSeries will have dynamic thermal and power management, alternate data paths, and other features designed to significantly cut back on high-impact outages. IBM may also be looking to implement a new set of backplane and I/O adapter technologies, starting with the Power5 generation and rolling into the Power6 boxes.
(Guild Companies) The consultancies that track spending on enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications are starting to indicate that IT spending for complex and expensive applications are on the rise again.
(Guild Companies) Worldwide server shipments were up 20.8 percent compared with the third quarter of 2002, with an estimated 1.37 million machines shipping, according to IT analyst firm Gartner. This is the third straight quarter of double-digit server shipment growth compared with 2002.
(iSeries Network) With the convergence of the pSeries and iSeries boxes in the Squadron project, rumors are circulating that there's another iSeries name change in the works.

The purchase was officially intended to run a poor school's Web site, but the machine was actually used for all 81 schools in the district, which ended up saving the district $1.6 million. District officials also have received another $500,000 in equipment that it may not have been eligible for.
(eWeek) CRM delivery is moving toward a mixed environment, involving a combination of traditional server software and hosted services to meet the needs of different types of enterprises, according to comments made by Thomas Siebel, chairman and CEO of Siebel Systems, in a keynote address at Comdex Las Vegas.
(eWeek) PeopleSoft amended its customer assurance program to declare that any change in PeopleSoft's board of directors that results in an acquisition would jump-start program refund payments to customers. PeopleSoft is also extending the program until December 31, when Oracle's offer to purchase PeopleSoft expires.
(CNET News.com) PeopleSoft confirmed this week that it has hired a new law firm to help fend off Oracle's hostile-takeover bid.
(CNET News.com) European antitrust regulators announced this week they're extending their review of Oracle's hostile-takeover bid for PeopleSoft into a second, in-depth stage.
(eWeek) The SCO Group plans to sue Novell over its acquisition of SuSE Linux. The suit will proceed on the grounds that SCO has a non-compete agreement with Novell that dates back to SCO's purchase of Linux.
(CNET News.com) Novell has denied The SCO Group's claims that its planned acquisition of SuSE Linux violates an eight-year-old noncompliance agreement Novell signed with SCO in 1995.
(CNET News.com) The SCO Group also said this week that it intends to sue large-scale Linux users for copyright infringement.
(eWeek) According to a report by the American Electronics Association, about 12 percent of the nation's high-tech jobs have evaporated during the past two years. But even though high-tech employers are on pace to lay off another 234,000 workers this year, the meltdown appears to be in its final stages.

Vendor Announcements, Promotions, And Deals

(CNET News.com) EMC said it plans to invest $100 million in its software development center in Bangalore, India, over the next five years.
(Guild Companies) Help/Systems released Robot/Console 4.0, which now immediately alerts an administrator when resources are not in their defined state. The new version also monitors the system history log and the security audit journal.
(Guild Companies) HiT Software's latest utility, SafeConduct, can be used to protect any type of TCP/IP service, including TN5250 emulation sessions, FTP sessions, and ODBC connections, all without having to modify existing programs.
(Guild Companies) LANSA's professional services organization introduced seven new prepackaged OS/400 and Windows applications this month as part of its new CodeStart program. The new applications provide much of the capability one would find in an integrated ERP package, including general ledger, order entry, and materials planning, but LANSA insists it is not becoming an ERP software vendor.
(Guild Companies) MPI Tech is bringing its DocOut and BlueServer print protocol conversion software products to Linux. This means organizations will be able to use a Linux server, or an iSeries Linux partition, to convert SCS, IPDS, and ICDS print jobs to PostScript, PDF, and other commonly used formats, allowing shops to print these documents on inexpensive LAN printers.
(Search400.com) PeopleSoft announced three improvements to the hosted packages it offers through PeopleSoft Global Services. PeopleSoft will provide improved service-level agreements on all of its applications, hosted versions of PeopleSoft Enterprise One and PeopleSoft World applications (which are targeted at the midmarket and iSeries lines of its J.D. Edwards acquisition), and remote hosting.
(CNET News.com) PeopleSoft also announced it reduced prices for its software hosting services by 10 to to 15 percent.
(eWeek) SAP and Sybase announced a partnership that will combine Sybase's relational database system with SAP's applications.
