I Lost My License Key!

IBM protects its licensed software from being used on multiple machines by issuing license keys. Without a license key, many popular OS/400 programs--such as Client Access; Backup, Recovery and Media Services (BRMS); and even OS/400 itself--will install on a black box but expire after a 70-day grace period. License keys are customarily delivered with your software as paper documents, which are easy to misplace. And usually you don't realize they've been misplaced until just before you're about to apply them to your machine using the Add License Key Information (ADDLICKEY) command.

So what happens if you lose a license key? You'll need to call IBM or the Business Partner that sold you the hardware to ask for a replacement key. This can be a long process involving a mean game of telephone tag, and it may take a day or two to get the proper key. If, however, you need to locate the key more quickly, IBM mans a telephone support line called the IBM Boulder Key Center. You can reach the Key Center at 1-800- 446-8989. The service is available only to U.S. customers and is open from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Mountain time. For registered products, IBM will generally e-mail you a license key the same day you request it, if you give them the following information and there are no problems verifying your license:

  • Your customer number
  • Your name
  • The serial number of the machine you're installing the product on
  • The product and option number of the licensed product you are installing
  • The e-mail address to send the license to

    • And that's pretty much it. IBM will verify that you bought the product and then e-mail you the key. This service is handy for getting the keys you need to get the job done now. So file this tip away for the next time you're installing new software and can't find that little piece of paper IBM gave you.
