Prompting iSeries Commands in Java
by Kevin Vandever

I was poking around the "what's new in this release" portion of the V5R2 iSeries Toolbox for Java documentation because of some serious research I was involved in (OK, I was looking for a topic for this article and came across a new Java class that I have been waiting for but was too lazy or unskilled in Java to write myself). This class adds much-needed flexibility to the method currently used to run an iSeries command from a Java application. Come check it out. READ MORE >

iSeriesMonitorME: An Intro to Wireless Programming with iSeries ToolboxME
by Marc Logemann

This is the first of three articles about Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) development with the ToolboxME API. I'll focus on the introduction of the wireless package in the JTOpen package (the open-source version of the IBM Toolbox for Java) and the J2ME specifications provided by Sun Microsystems, and detail the CLDC configuration and the MIDP profile. In the next article I will outline how to prepare for a J2ME-based development project. In the third, I will program our first MIDlet, which communicates with an iSeries server to check system status. This application is also the name of the article series, which I call iSeriesMonitorME. READ MORE >

Tired of Resetting Terminals on the AS/400? Let Somebody Else Do It, Part 2
by Doug Mewmaw

In my last article, I shared with you my concern about help-desk associates spending too much time resetting terminal sessions on the AS/400 and, subsequently, not enough time working on more important issues. I then showed you a solution that I created, called active session notification, which enables me to keep track of the number of active sessions per user. This is the first step toward not only aiding the help-desk associates but also empowering users. In this article, I will demonstrate my method that allows users to systematically reset their own sessions. READ MORE >

Working with Visual Basic's Printer Object
by Bob Butcher

I remember a few years ago when I first started creating Visual Basic applications for my clients to view their AS/400 data. They loved the idea that they had a GUI screen to putter around the database with. After a few weeks, one of my clients approached me and said, "Can we print this information to our desktop printer?" I did some research and found that printing within Visual Basic isn't hard at all if you get up to speed with its Printer object. READ MORE >
