CL-Like Error Handling
in RPG

by Kevin Vandever

How many programs in your shop handle file errors? What about general program errors, such as divide by zero, array index, or pointer exceptions? The tools are there to do so. The program and file information data structures provide error information, and the *PSSR subroutine and %STATUS built-in function can be used to trap and handle that information, but that isn't enough. Well, with V5R1, IBM has given RPG the capability to handle errors much the way CL does and, in doing so, has kicked RPG up a few notches!

Installing and Configuring Tomcat on iSeries
by David Morris

Apache Software Foundation's Tomcat gives the iSeries a free, open-source alternative to IBM's WebSphere. Both products provide full support for servlets and JavaServer Pages, and both run on the iSeries. The difference is that WebSphere tries to be everything to every Web application, while Tomcat focuses on servlet and JSP support. This focused support means that Tomcat uses far less RAM and CPU, enabling it to run on low-end iSeries and AS/400 systems. Tomcat is also much easier to configure and run than WebSphere.

It wasn't that long ago that the only way I knew how to put data onto a user's screen was by using an AS/400 display file. As I started to use the Internet more and more, however, and as I began to grow curious about how the Internet, and Web pages in particular, worked, I began to pick up a few things here and there. One day I finally decided to bite the bullet and sit down and learn how to use HTML, the heart and soul of the Internet. To my surprise, I learned that there are really only a few HTML tags (think DDS keyword) that are used over and over on 99 percent of all Web pages. Once I learned these, I could do pretty much anything I wanted with a Web page. And you can, too.

Java Concepts for iSeries Programmers
by Kevin Vandever

In this, just our third, issue of Midrange Programmer, OS/400 Edition, my co-editor, Shannon O'Donnell, and I, with help from many talented others, have thrown a lot of good technical information at you. Much of this information has been centered around Java and Java-related tools. So instead of giving you a half-melted box of stale chocolates for Valentine's Day, I thought I would cover the basics of Java and provide you with some definitions and simple examples, so that you can properly handle the more advance techniques. Besides, Shannon took the chocolates and has already managed to smear them all over his keyboard.

Build Dynamic Web Apps With iSeries Tomcat
by Richard Shaler

I described how to obtain, install, and configure Tomcat for your PC, and presented a sample JavaServer Page (JSP) application to run on your PC and retrieve information from your iSeries in "JavaServer Pages 101." With nothing more than an average PC and the free Tomcat servlet engine, from Apache Software Foundation, you can now start developing Java-based Web applications. (Though you'll probably want to use your iSeries system instead of a PC when it comes time to put your application on the Web.)
