iSeriesMonitorME: A Real-World Wireless iSeries Application
by Marc Logemann

In this last article of our series about wireless programming, I will show you the steps to create your first application, known as MIDlet. It's assumed that you merely know how to create simple menus and commands in the MIDP API. This application is not a ten-liner describing raw ToolboxME ProgramCall usage, but a complete application that can be extended later on. The application will call a system API on the iSeries in order to query such information as which users are currently signed on or what is the number of batch jobs running. READ MORE >

Implementing Check Constraints in Referential Integrity
by Jim Coker

In my last two articles, "Referential Integrity: Ensuring Your Database Contains Only Valid Data" and "Implementing Referential Constraints in Referential Integrity," I discussed the different concepts involved in Referential Integrity. In the first article, I reviewed the two types of constraints available in RI: a referential constraint, in which a column in a table is verified to be consistent with a column in another table, and a check constraint, in which a column in a table is verified to be consistent with a hard-coded value or the value of another column within that same table. Creating a Better iSeries Interactive Environment
by Doug Mewmaw

IBM ships iSeries boxes with standard subsystems, like QBATCH (for batch workloads) and QSPOOL (for printer jobs). These generic subsystems have default configurations and settings, so customers can simply turn on the system and go. Workloads automatically run in designated subsystems, and you never have to make a change to the work management parameters. But what if you could set up an interactive environment that not only ensures you won't have unauthorized users on your system but also allows you to differentiate business units into their own subsystems? Back to Basics: Pointers in RPG
by Kevin Vandever

You might think that pointers are new to the RPG world, but, in fact, that is not the case. Pointers have been around for a long time, but it is only recently that we as RPG programmers could really take advantage of them beyond what OS/400 provided us. In this article, I am going to discuss the basics of pointers and show you some ways to use them. READ MORE >
