Empower Users with Embedded SQL
by Kevin Vandever

Do you want to provide your users with maximum subfile flexibility, but are tired of open query files, multiple logical files, and placing all your selection logic inside RPG? Whether you're just a considerate programmer, you want the users off your back, or you're simply interested in learning cool technology, it might be time for you to give embedded SQL a whirl and give the power back to the users, by letting them sort and select the data how they want, dynamically.

Fun with VARPG Radio Buttons
by Shannon O'Donnell

In the last issue, I introduced you to the integrated development environment of IBM's VisualAge for RPG by showing you how to add a couple of buttons to a GUI Form and then display some text in a form's static text part. In this issue, I'm going to show you one way you might expand on the idea of adding text, by using radio button parts to control what text appears on the Form.

Simplify JSP Applications with JavaBeans, Part 2
by Richard Shaler

In my last article, I illustrated how to simplify a JSP application by pulling some logic out of the JSP and placing it in a JavaBean. In this article I'll illustrate how you can make the JavaBean more reusable than it was in the previous article. The JavaBean will become truly independent of any other component of the application. The modified JavaBean will be much easier to plug into essentially any application that may need it.

Stream I/O in Qshell
by Ted Holt

To those of us who use IBM midrange computers, a file is an organized set of structured data that can be accessed sequentially or randomly. In a Unix system, however, a file is an unorganized stream of characters that can be processed sequentially. These are two different concepts, and because Unix and Unix-like computing are everywhere, iSeries professionals should understand both of them. This article deals with the use of stream files in the iSeries' Qshell environment.

The iSeries Toolbox for Java Does Service Programs
by Kevin Vandever

In "Calling a Program Using the iSeries Toolbox for Java," I called an RPG program from a Java class with the help of an XML extension called PCML. In "The Basics of ILE Service Programs," I provided the inner workings of a service program and listed some of its advantages. Now I'll combine the two techniques and call service programs from Java using the toolbox. It's not as important as combining peanut butter and chocolate, and it may have its limits, but it won't rot your teeth.

Learning Java by Example
by Shannon O'Donnell

Sometimes all you want is for someone to simply show you how to do something because you don't have the time to research it on your own. Sometimes we all feel that way, because we have way too much to do. So what the heck? Let's take one article and forget about the how's and the why's and instead concentrate only on the how-to. In this article, I'm going to show you how to use Java to accomplish some useful and unique tasks.

Reader Feedback and Insights

Thanks for the informative article ["VisualAge for RPG: Who Knew It Was So Much Fun?"]. VARPG is something that interests me, but I have not yet had an opportunity to use it. Hopefully, I will have the chance when we install V5R1 in a month or two. After reading the article, I have some questions for you. . . READ MORE >
