Work with Active Jobs from Operations Navigator by Shannon O'Donnell One of the most frequently used green-screen panels on the iSeries is Work with Active Jobs (WRKACTJOB). From that screen you can see which jobs are running, which jobs are hogging the most CPU cycles, and, if you really need to have your job finish before any other, which jobs you can terminate abnormally. Most iSeries shops would be lost without Work with Active Jobs. But did you know that the Work with Active Jobs functionality is also available with Operations Navigator?
Getting to WRKACTJOB from Operations Navigator Before you can use the Work with Active Jobs feature of Operations Navigator, you must first ensure that you are on V5R1 of Client Access Express. If you're not sure, open Operations Navigator and click the Help menu item and then the About Operations Navigator menu item. Your current version information will be displayed there. To get to the Operations Navigator version of Work with Active Jobs, open a connection to your V5R1 iSeries system by double-clicking the system name in the OpsNav GUI. Next, click the plus (+) sign next to the Work Management tree item. Finally, click the Active Jobs tree item. You'll see a panel very similar to the one shown here: ![]() Active Jobs Features There are lots of great things you can do with the GUI version of Work with Active Jobs that you cannot do with the green-screen version. Sorting on columns in the green-screen version, for instance, requires you to move the cursor to that column and press a combination of the Shift key and the F4 key. Not difficult, but certainly not convenient, either. To sort on a column in the Active Jobs GUI in OpsNav, simply click on that column heading. What could be easier? But wait! There's more! If you want to refresh the current list of Active Jobs statistics, simply right-click the Active Jobs tree item, in the left hand pane of the OpsNav GUI, and select the Refresh Statistics tree item. How about if you want the list to be refreshed automatically? Right-click the Active Jobs tree item and select Properties. The panel shown here will appear: ![]() If the information you want to see doesn't automatically appear on the Active Jobs GUI, you can add it. To do so, click the Options menu item, in the OpsNav GUI, and then click the Columns menu item. The panel shown here will appear: ![]() There are about 29 individual pieces of information you can display on the Active Jobs GUI. That's significantly more than you can view from the green-screen version. In fact, the OpsNav GUI version of Active Jobs really combines several green-screen panels, such as WRKACTJOB and WRKSYSSTS, into one convenient GUI. To add a column of data, click on that data item name in the left-hand side of the Columns panel, and then click the Add Before or Add After button. To remove a column from the list, click on the item you want to remove in the right-hand pane of the Columns panel, and then click the Remove button. Once you've added the new columns to the Active Jobs panel, you can click on those columns to sort the data by that field. If you only want to see Active Jobs for a certain user profile, or maybe for a selected subsystem, you can very easily accomplish that, too. Right-click the Active Jobs tree item, and then click Include. The panel shown here will appear: ![]() From this panel, you can choose to display jobs for only a selected user profile, a selected subsystem, a selected job number, and so on. This functionality gives you the ability to control individual jobs at a level never before experienced by green-screen users! Cool Tool The OpsNav Active Jobs feature is a very cool tool. Take some time to experiment with it, and then give it to your system operators to use. They'll thank you for it!
