VARPG Game Programming
by Shannon O'Donnell
It gets boring writing business applications all the time. However, writing a good computer game using 5250 green-screen display files results in some really lame games. VARPG brings good news and bad news to the AS/400 gaming world. The good news is that, using VARPG, you can write some really kickin' computer games. The bad news is that you can also write some really lame computer games! Let's get started with VARPG game programming by creating a simple game. READ MORE >

Automate XML File Creation with XLE
by Kevin Vandever
Code generators and CASE tools are often looked at as nice ideas, but not the silver bullets they claim to be. Cries concerning poor and inefficient code, impractical learning curves, or the fear that programmers would become obsolete lead the charge against these technologies. The theories behind the technologies themselves are not bad. In fact, they are rather good if they can withstand the charges against them. Well, that' s what IBM alphaWorks has done with its XML Lightweight Extractor (XLE) tool. READ MORE >

Cool Things in CODE/400: Changing Your Library List
by Scott Mildenberger
If you work with multiple applications in CODE/400, it is often necessary to compile using different library lists. Wouldn't it be cool if there were an option on the Code menu to change the library list for each of your applications? I will show you how to add just such a menu option to Code. READ MORE >

Using Tomcat Connection Pooling with Commons-DBCP
by Marc Logemann
When using your Java development tool of choice, connections are expensive objects, in terms of CPU time within your application and the database server. The fact that you have a Web application makes it even worse, because HTTP is a stateless protocol. READ MORE >

by Kevin Vandever
I know most of you out there always include error-handling logic inside your programs. You cover every possible runtime error with concise, modular, and reusable error-handling logic. But the rest of you, who occasionally miss a potential runtime error or simply choose to lump error handling with commenting and get to it when you can, may want learn how to implement error-handling logic with only minimal modifications to your code. Back to Basics: Self-Updating Display File
by Shannon O'Donnell
One of the coolest AS/400 programming "tricks" I ever learned was how to make a standard, 5250 green-screen subfile self-update. Using this technique, I can cause data to automatically appear on a user's display, without any keyboard input. The self-updating display file technique has been around for at least as long as the AS/400, but it's one of those things that, unless you've seen it done, just never dawns on you that it's even possible.
