Linux Beginning to Show Life on iSeries
by Alex Woodie

Linux is here, and, according to IBM, iSeries shops are starting to use it. More than 100 iSeries users are installing Linux on more than 500 servers, according to Craig Johnson, IBM's iSeries Linux product manager. Johnson says the first iSeries Linux adopters tend to be small and midsize business and that they're installing Linux on smaller boxes, mostly iSeries Model 270s and 820s.

Vendors Eager to Port to iSeries Linux
by Alex Woodie

If porting to Linux were a car race, you'd be hearing a booming voice over a loudspeaker say, "Gentlemen, port your software!" ISVs have been racing to port applications to run on iSeries Linux. Helped along by IBM's iSeries Linux Test Drive, aimed at giving non-OS/400 developers access to iSeries for porting and testing, the number of ISVs porting software to iSeries Linux is growing rapidly.

Open Source Is Alive and Well in OS/400 Land
by Alex Woodie

Despite its proprietary nature and reclusive status, iSeries has a bright future in open-source application development. Yes, the iSeries can run Linux, the popular open-source operating system, which will, in short order, allow thousands of 32-bit applications--most of which are written in C and are open-source--to run on iSeries hardware. And there's the 64-bit Portable Application Solutions Environment runtime environment, capable of running AIX applications.

Perception Is Reality
by Dan Burger

Stop me if you've heard this one before. There was this AS/400 shop running applications developed in the Stone Age. Many of its users saw green screens and thought it was "old technology," so management believed that old-technology label, too. Over the years, tasks were removed from the '400 and run on NT servers, where users found things more to their liking. Meanwhile, the IT department saw its OS/400-based world being flushed down the porcelain receptacle.

Duncan Lays Out Strategy in iNation Conference Call
by Alex Woodie

Buell Duncan discussed IBM's iSeries strategy for the new year in the first iSeries Nation Chatting with Citizens event of 2002 yesterday. Speaking from New Orleans, Duncan, the general manager of IBM's midmarket server division, said the iSeries had a terrific third quarter in 2001, particularly in Europe and Canada, but especially in China, where the iSeries has had three straight years of double-digit growth. Much of that growth is due to the release of OS/400 V5R1, which has been licensed by 25,000 companies to date, and the new LPAR and Linux functionality, Duncan said.
