Kisco Adds Security Features to SafeNet/400

by Dan Burger

Security administrators are taking a closer look at limiting access to iSeries and AS/400 computers from network connections. One of the ways to do that is through controls time-of-day and day-of-week access points.

Kisco Information Systems has included those security measures, and added several new wrinkles, to SafeNet/400.

Time-of-day and day-of-week limit controls in SafeNet/400 now open and shut iSeries and AS/400 network access points--from 5250, FTP, ODBC, TCP/IP, SQL, and TelNet sources--at intervals designated by the security administrator.

SafeNet/400’s latest access controls are designed to limit the access of those who possess user profiles but attempt to connect to the system during non-business or restricted periods. In addition to limiting time-of- day and day-of-week access, SafeNet/400 imposes exclusion rules at the network function level that allow security administrators to define up to 20 holidays during which system access is restricted.

The additional layer of security--above native OS/400 object-level security--does not make the system more difficult to use, according to Rich Loeber, president of Kisco.

SafeNet/400 limits and controls access through more than 40 network exit points. System security administrators can audit, control access to, and report on security-related system activity. The product also provides real-time alerts of attempts to breach system security. SafeNet/400 does not require changes to system security settings or applications, and does not adopt authority.

SafeNet/400 licenses, which support up to 25 network users, start at $1,995. Kisco offers free evaluation copies of SafeNet/400, which can be downloaded with complete software documentation in PDF format from its Web site, at www.kisco.com.
