Tree Top Harvests an iSeries Portal from Enfish
by Alex Woodie
Tree Top Inc. was founded by Washington state apple growers in 1960 as a cooperative to process fruit and
provide financial stability. Today, more than 2,000 apple and pear growers are co-owners of Tree Top,
which has close to $300 million in sales and employs 1,300 people across the West.
After completing its Y2K conversion project, the grower's IT department established five
strategic initiatives to help guide the collective into the new millennium. One of those initiatives was to
build a companywide intranet, or an enterprise portal, to reduce the amount of paper in the
office and cut down on unstructured data clogging the shared network drive.

New iSeries Utility Addresses FTP Security
by Alex Woodie
The iSeries is recognized as one of the most secure servers available on the commercial market today. Its
object-oriented design is virtually immune to today's viruses, and its five levels of built-in security gives
systems administrators a great deal of control over which functions are available to various classes of users.
However robust iSeries security is, the OS/400 platform was conceived long before today's Internet
protocols were in widespread use. Without properly securing TCP/IP, FTP, and other network access
points, your AS/400 or iSeries could be left as vulnerable as that Windows NT server down the hall.

The iSeries Drives New ASP-based Business Intelligence Offerings
by Alex Woodie
Though the application service provider (ASP) model isn't all it was cracked up to be, some companies are
finding it an excellent medium for delivering iSeries-based business intelligence and analysis to their
customers.
Analytical and Information Services is an Orlando, Florida, company that helps destination resorts and five-
star hotels crunch data about their guests so they can keep them coming back. The 360 Group is a
San Rafael, California, organization that helps companies in many industries create marketing plans and
manage their customer relationships more effectively. Both companies are working to build new analytical
offerings that leverage their working knowledge of the iSeries to deliver valuable information to their
clients using the Internet.

Kisco Adds Security Features to SafeNet/400
by Dan Burger
Security administrators are taking a closer look at limiting access to iSeries and AS/400 computers from
network connections. One of the ways to do that is through controls time-of-day and day-of-week access
points.
Kisco Information Systems has included those security measures, and added several new wrinkles,
to SafeNet/400.

KemeTECH Expands Excel Support
by Alex Woodie
KemeTECH Systems has announced its expanded support for multi-page Microsoft
Excel spreadsheets and dBASE data in the latest release of its ConversionSuite, a collection of
three OS/400 utilities for sharing data between PCs and AS/400s or iSeries servers.
With this new release, the Newark, New Jersey, company has shuffled some of the command functions
available within two of the utilities and added entirely new functions as well. These changes reflect the
growing need for expanded support of PC data--particularly Excel spreadsheets--among KemeTECH's
customer base, the company said.

Corrections
The article "Duncan
Lays Out 2002 Strategy in iNation Conference Call," published January 15,
originally stated that, "Speaking from New Orleans, Duncan, the general manager of IBM's midmarket
server division, said the iSeries had a terrific third quarter in 2001, particularly in Europe, Canada, and
China, where the iSeries has had three straight years of double-digit growth." The line now reads, "Speaking
from New Orleans, Duncan, the general manager of IBM's midmarket server division, said the iSeries had a
terrific third quarter in 2001, particularly in Europe and Canada, but especially in China, where the iSeries
has had three straight years of double-digit growth." The correction was made January 17.
