  • Maines Paper & Food Service, the nation's fifth largest food service distributor, reports that its distribution center is running much more efficiently, thanks to Manhattan Associates' OS/400-based warehouse management system and Vocollect's slick voice technology. Maines recently installed Manhattan Associates' PkMS 2002R1 at its 300,000 square foot distribution center in Conklin, New York, which services more than 1,000 customers and handles more than 13,000 SKUs. Along with PkMS, Maines installed Vocollect's Talkman voice system, which enables distribution center workers to verbally communicate directly with PkMS using a wireless, wearable terminal. The Talkman voice system replaces a traditional scanner system and allows Maines employees to communicate every aspect of every pick they make. The combined solution has enabled Maines to triple its picking accuracy, says Manhattan Associates, and the company ultimately expects to improve its picking accuracy by a factor of 10.

  • VillageEDOCS, a California fax service provider, and Resolutions, a Georgia document management software company, announced last week they have formed a partnership to deliver Resolutions' forms management software as an outsourced service. The new alliance integrates VillageEDOCS's data center services with Resolutions' software, which provides network printing, e-mail, fax, and electronic document presentation for electronic document delivery. The companies' new offering also provides customers with the capability to receive a fax document, such as an invoice or a purchase order, to scan documents, and to populate a database with data from documents. Company officials say the pay-as-you-go service will help customers cut costs because they won't have to purchase hardware or software.

  • Restoring patient records from tape archives is much faster at Miami Children's Hospital now that it has successfully deployed LXI's Media Management System. The 268-bed hospital, like all medical facilities regulated by the federal government, must maintain patient records for 28 years, which translates into terabytes of archived data. Before installing Media Management System, the hospital's IT staff manually backed up the hospital's AS/400 Model 720 to an IBM 3590 tape library, and finding a particular patient file was an arduous process that could take up to an hour and a half. Now that the hospital has installed Media Management System, which allows users to track tapes using barcodes and scanners, the time it takes to find and restore patient files has dropped to under five minutes. The hospital also reports that Media Management System has cut down on data loss due to improper handling of tapes.

  • Momentum Utilities is having a New Year's sale on its electronic forms package for the iSeries. Companies can now purchase Momentum's entire JacanaForms for $8,000, the Australian software company recently announced. JacanaForms, which runs on a Windows NT server, intercepts raw output from an OS/400 server and integrates it with an electronic form template designed by the customer. JacanaForms gives customers the choice of faxing, e-mailing, printing, or storing their documents, and helps decrease the dependency on pre-printed forms or stationery. The software also supports Adobe PDF documents and can generate barcodes and MICR checks. Momentum is offering customers the complete JacanaForms package along with enough consultancy services to create the customer's first form and get them up and running. Customers will also have access to Momentum's Web-based JacanaForms training program, called JuMPs.

  • Wyse Technology last week launched its new Winterm 3820 TX, a wireless thin-client tablet computer for workers who need mobile access to server-based applications. Weighing in at a scant 3.5 pounds, the Winterm 3820 TX, with its 12.1-inch LCD touch-screen and handwriting-recognition software, is practical for employees who cannot be strictly deskbound, such as medical professionals, factory supervisors, and retail sales employees, says Brad Rowland, director of product management at the San Jose, California, company. Winterm 3820 TX runs the Microsoft Windows CE operating system, comes with 32 MB of memory, and uses Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol and Citrix ICA communications protocols to communicate with its server. The computer accepts several different 802.11b cards for wireless LAN access and costs $1,499.

  • The iSeries training specialist Manta Technologies last week announced that it is now making its library of courses and exams available over the Web. The new online delivery method, called MantaNow, provides students with access to any of Manta's 100 iSeries training courses or exams, which Manta traditionally sold on CD-ROMs, through a Web browser, for three days. The cost is $99 per student and a Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser is required. Additionally, Manta announced it is also offering an Enterprise License for large or geographically dispersed companies that want to give multiple employees online access to iSeries training courses. Under the Enterprise License, an organization prepays for a specified number of courses, and each student is provided with a user ID and a password, which give them access to the courses for three full years. Depending on the number of students at a company, the Enterprise License can drop the price of a single course to as low as $25 per student. A typical organization with, say, 75 students would pay less than $1,500 per student to provide each student with access to the entire 100-course Manta library.
