New Report Generator Designed for LANSA Apps
by Alex Woodie
Momentum Utilities, an Australian provider of report generators
for the OS/400 platform, recently announced it has developed a report writer designed specifically for AS/400 and
iSeries applications created using LANSA's
fourth-generation language development environment. LANSA Reporter is based on Momentum's Jacana Collection suite of
tools but includes a special interface that allows for retrieval of information from the data repository that underlies
all LANSA applications.
LANSA Reporter is a report development environment that streamlines the process of defining what raw data to include
in a report, isolating the files that contain that data, gathering the data, and then presenting information in a graphical
format that helps reader comprehension. Like Jacana, LANSA Reporter can be put to use by nontechnical business
users and hardened gear-heads alike, producing summary, detail, or matrix reports about company operations. The
reports can be stored and distributed in a variety of ways.
LANSA Reporter consists of four modules, three of which are members of Momentum's Jacana Collection. The Jacana
Collection members include Jacana, a Windows-based, WYSIWYG report designer that guides users through the layout
process using wizards; OPEN/DB, the AS/400-resident component that does the heavy lifting work of compiling the
report that the user defined using Jacana, and provides security; and Valet, which operates specifically with OPEN/DB
and allows users to organize and run their reports from a Windows environment, instead of the standard green-screen
environment.
The fourth component of LANSA Reporter, MBRace, is the interface piece that lets the rest of the Jacana Collection
take advantage of the business rules that are built into the LANSA Repository, the object-oriented database that is the
heart of all LANSA applications. MBRace helps to define file relationships and automates the transfer of LANSA
Repository elements--such as field and file descriptions, virtual and derived fields, and predetermined joins--into the
Jacana environment.
LANSA already provided ad hoc query and reporting capabilities with LANSA/Client, but users were looking for
something more, says Bill Benjamin, LANSA's vice president of business development.
"Many of our customers have been looking for ways to enhance their reporting and data presentation capability," he
says. "LANSA Reporter fills a need for information retrieval that many of our customers have asked us for, "while
providing" our customers and partners with a leading edge, proven technology to address these business requirements."
LANSA Reporter is now available through LANSA. Licenses for the software are priced between $10,000 and $50,000.
