News Briefs and Product Shorts

This week's news roundup includes a mix of financial reports, major software implementations, and event announcements that can help you tell which way the wind is blowing in the midrange. These glimpses offer somewhat of a forecast--an indication of which IT companies are riding the business cycles and which ones are stalled in their tracks. Keep an eye on things with a quick read starting right here.

  • Even a Christian products distribution company doesn't rely on faith alone when it comes to the supply chain. Would you, if you had more than 100,000 SKUs and were looking to add a state-of-the-art supply chain application to your legacy computing platforms (AS/400 and HP 3000)? For Riverside Distributors, the nation's leading distributor of Christian books, jewelry, apparel, and other Christian goods, the path was lit by Syngistix, a provider of functional extension solutions for legacy environments. Syngistix recently announced that Riverside Distributors has installed its n-tier, networked supply chain solution, X!TE, enabling the company to use Windows 2000 desktops to run a number of Syngistix supply chain and e-commerce modules, while allowing it to keep the bulk of its data in legacy AS/400 and HP 3000 databases.
  • Aero California, a regional airline that serves Baja California from its headquarters at Los Angeles International Airport, recently announced that its new iSeries-based financial system will be driven by applications from Infinium Software and Cognos. The company will use Infinium's Financial Management application to handle payments, invoices, and receivables at both domestic and international levels. Software from Cognos will be integrated with the Infinium application to provide revenue forecasting.
  • IBM Global Financing last week announced it will use software developed by Fair, Isaac & Company to power a new credit review program that it is planning to build. The Fair, Isaac Decision System uses proprietary algorithms to help companies automate the process of making consistent and accurate business decisions involving complex variables and specific business policies. IBM Global Financing plans to use the software to review prospective customers' credit, as a component of its new Global Credit Solution. Although Decision System runs on major operating systems--including OS/390, OS/400, Unix, and Windows--it was not immediately known which of its platforms IBM would use in deployment.
  • Striva, a vendor of data integration software for OS/400, DB2, and all other major platforms and databases, announced last week that it has landed an OEM deal with Creative Computing, a hardware reseller and services organization that specializes in developing datamarts and data warehouses. Creative Computing will market Striva's DETAIL data integration software as a component of its new CCI Connect offering, which will also use Cognos' DecisionStream business-intelligence and ETL (extraction, transformation, and load) software. With CCI Connect, a company will be able to access all of its data with standard SQL, regardless of the application and database it resides in.
  • Later today, DataMirror and IBM will host a "Webinar" (a Web-based seminar) on iSeries clustering. Resiliency for IBM iSeries-based Businesses will feature the insights of two industry experts--Eric Hess, an iSeries advanced technical support specialist at IBM, and Glen Sakuth, director of development at DataMirror. The free, 60-minute event begins at 1:30 p.m. EST. To register, call 800-362-5955, ext. 139, or visit www.datamirror.com/iserieswebinar.
  • iSeries chief scientist Dr. Frank Soltis and iSeries Linux and server consolidation guru Craig Johnson will host the next iSeries Nation "Chatting with Citizens," on Friday at 10:00 a.m. EST. The topic of the chat is Linux, and the confirmation number is 428245. To register, call 800-289-0579 or visit www.premconf.com/rsvp.
  • Jacada reported its fourth-quarter and year-end financial results last week. The Atlanta, Georgia, provider of legacy rejuvenation and integration products for IBM's OS/400 and mainframe platforms reported total revenues of $25.5 million for its fiscal year 2001, which ended December 31. That was up just a hair from the $25.1 million the company posted for fiscal year 2000. Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2001 was $5.8 million, up 11 percent from its third-quarter 2001 figure but down $2 million, or 25 percent, from the record quarterly figures the company posted for the fourth quarter of 2000 and the first quarter of 2001, which ended the company's string of 12 consecutive quarters of revenue growth.
  • Together we can make a difference, and Surround Technologies is leading the charge. Spurred by the events of September 11 and the economic slowdown, the Hackettstown, New Jersey, provider of business intelligence solutions for the OS/400 platform has announced a "recession buster" sale, whereby the price of the company's OS/400 software and consulting services is reduced by 50 percent through February 28. "By offering an unprecedented discount on all of our software and services," says chief executive Lee Paul, "Surround Technologies believes that, with the help of other companies, we can pull this country out of the recession together. The key is to help make companies feel comfortable in spending again."
