Help/Systems Releases SNMP Trapper for OS/400
by Alex Woodie
Help/Systems last week unveiled a new member
of its systems management suite that adds network monitoring power to OS/400 servers. Robot/TRAPPER
uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to passively gather information about the status of
devices, including other servers, PCs, routers, firewalls, time clocks, shipping scales--anything that can be
assigned an IP address--and to actively "ping" the devices periodically to make sure they're still working
properly.

BOS Addresses Printing, Availability Issues
by Alex Woodie
Better On-Line Solutions last week announced
enhancements to its e-Twin@x Controller that address issues concerning lost network connections and label
and barcode printing clarity. The Version 2.5 release of this multipurpose networking device, which allows
AS/400 and iSeries shops to bring 5250 "dumb terminals" and other legacy, SNA-based peripherals into
modern IP-based networks, features new hardware and software that BOS says alleviate circumstances that

News Briefs and Product Shorts
The ramifications of the vulnerabilities of the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) continue to
occupy the minds of software vendors, tech reporters, and, to a lesser degree, users last week. Several
vendors said they were looking into potential exposures to the flaw in their software and preferred to hold
off discussing the matter until they could be sure of their status. Other vendors such as Peregrine Systems capitalized on the situation by quickly rolling
out new products.
