IBM Revives OV/400 Migration Tool
by Alex Woodie
Late last year IBM stopped marketing a tool that helps
companies migrate off OfficeVision/400. It was hoped that, by that time, OV/400 users would have found
replacements for the software, which officially died with the introduction of OS/400 V5R1, in May 2001.
However, some OV/400 users have refused to move off the software. In hopes of budging these stubborn
users off the software, IBM brought the OV/400 Migration Tool back to life on March 1.

Insider's View: A Cure for the Common Form
by Kurt A. Mueffelmann
Preprinted forms have always had a limited shelf life. A company merges, moves, changes a name or logo,
adds or removes a marketing tag line, and suddenly all of its forms have to go to the recycle bin and be
replaced with new preprinted forms that will become obsolete as soon as the next change occurs. These
changes have to be rolled out through all the forms the company uses, such as invoices, credit memos,
packing lists, purchase orders, and checks.

Business Documents Go Digital with ACOM
by Dan Burger
The advancing digital marketplaces have many companies evaluating their next steps of preparation. How
will IT departments harvest the greatest benefits while integrating their back-end applications to the
marketplaces and exchanges? The capability to exchange electronic documents on an application-to-
application level is the desired goal. A central focus in the evaluation process involves ERP systems or
accounting applications for buyers, and sales order, inventory, and catalog information for sellers.

Bringing AFP Back from the Dead
by Alex Woodie
With the introduction of OS/400 V5R1, last May, IBM released two new document
output utilities: Infoprint Server for iSeries, which extends the iSeries print queue output to e-mail and the
Web, and Infoprint Designer, which allows companies to develop custom forms in OS/400's native
graphical document format, AFP. For companies in the market for electronic forms management software,
it's probably worth considering these utilities and making a special note about their heavy reliance on AFP.

News Briefs and Product Shorts
This issue of Midrange Stuff features a number of stories on document management issues facing
iSeries shops, so it's fitting that this week's lead News Brief centers on that topic. FormScape last week announced its document output software has
been certified by J.D. Edwards to manage output
generated by the OneWorld ERP suite. We also have a story about two cities in Indiana that plan to save
$500,000 by going in together on an iSeries system for police, fire, and paramedic services.
