SoftLanding's Change Management Tools Support LANSA
by Dan Burger
Developers building Internet, intranet and wireless applications that access and update iSeries and Windows NT/2000 data using LANSA 4GL applications have a new reason to consider change management software. SoftLanding Systems recently released LanTurn 5.0, the latest version of the company's TurnOver Change Management software that interfaces to the LANSA development environment. LanTurn supports both LANSA for the Web and Visual LANSA.
TurnOver, along with its LanTurn interface, organizes and automates the development process for LANSA applications, from initial change request to deployment. In addition, TurnOver archives LANSA components on OS/400 servers, provides auditable change history, and can automatically deploy LANSA applications to iSeries and AS/400 servers. Deployment can be scheduled, backed by extensive rollback and recovery options to ensure high application availability.
With LanTurn's support for products such as LANSA for the Web and Visual LANSA, developers who work in a GUI environment can use TurnOver without leaving their Windows screen. LanTurn also makes it possible to promote traditional RPG and LANSA for iSeries objects into new LANSA partitions or machines together with related GUI components. Additionally with LanTurn 5.0, when a TurnOver task is created, a duplicate LANSA task can be created automatically. With each further update, the LANSA task is also updated automatically.
LanTurn 5.0 permits the management of Web components in exactly the same way as other LANSA object types. LANSA definitions are imported from production into the development partition or machine, to be used with any appropriate combination of LANSA's Web development tools, such as e-Business Frameworks Wizard, LANSA Web Editor, Visual LANSA, or LANSA for iSeries. After changes are made by the developer, the object can be promoted to a testing or production environment by adding it to a TurnOver form. When the TurnOver form is run, the object is exported from the development partition and imported into the appropriate testing or production partition or machine.
LanTurn 5.0 also supports Visual LANSA components, such as forms, reusable parts, bitmaps, icons, visual styles, and ActiveX components. Although TurnOver stores these components on the iSeries, Visual LANSA developers can select the objects needed directly through the LANSA Repository Explorer and perform a LANSA checkout. LanTurn manages these components the same way as all other LANSA objects, giving LANSA developers a familiar, intuitive environment in which to work.
When a TurnOver task is created, LanTurn can be configured to automatically create a corresponding LANSA task and to update that task as work progresses. Once a developer's work is complete, LanTurn can be used to filter objects by LANSA task ID and to build a TurnOver Worklist, ensuring all related changes are captured for checkout and promotion through TurnOver.
TurnOver has built-in interfaces with Code/400, COOL:Plex, Deploy/400, Deploy/PC, J.D. Edwards, PVCS Version Manager, and TurnOver PDQ. Optional interfaces include AS/SET, LANSA, COOL:2E, and ProGen Plus. LanTurn is licensed separately from TurnOver. Pricing is set at $9,000. TurnOver has a tiered price structure that begins at $11,500.
