Magic Backs iBOLT Strategy with New Release of eDeveloper by Alex Woodie Magic Software last week delivered much of the underlying technology that will be central to its iBOLT integration strategy with eDeveloper 9.4, which the company says is its biggest release of the fourth-generation-language development environment. Major new features include new XML, COM, and Java support, as well as support for standard messaging environments, including WebSphere MQ, MSMQ, and Java Messaging Services. Previously, eDeveloper supported only Magic Software's own proprietary messaging environment. Last month, Magic Software announced its new iBOLT application integration strategy. With iBOLT, the company will be delivering a collection of software that includes a business process flow editor, software to manage the flow of business processes among applications, and a collection of pre-built adapters for popular applications, databases, and file types. Magic Software's aim with iBOLT is to find a happy medium between a purely enterprise application integration (EAI)-oriented environment and a purely application development-oriented environment, to allow small and midsized businesses to begin building composite applications. For more on iBOLT, which was expected to start shipping this month, see "Magic Details New iBOLT Integration Software and Strategy." With eDeveloper 9.4, Magic Software has delivered core enhancements giving iBOLT extended reach into both Java and Microsoft environments. The new features include full support for Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM), including a new interface that lets the user execute applications created with eDeveloper as COM objects, such as OLE objects and ActiveX controls. This release of eDeveloper also provides enhanced handling of Java objects, through eDeveloper's Java Access generator. Magic Software has automated more of the development process in eDeveloper 9.4 with the addition of the eDeveloper Wizard and the XML Component Generator. The XML Component Generator can automatically create XML components that can be accessed by any application, including the generation of tables for hierarchical XML structure, the creation of programs that can read and write XML documents, and the creation of direct element access programs. This release also includes support for the JMS, MSMQ, and WebSphere MQ messaging technologies, providing tightened interoperability and heightened functionality for accessing a range of applications. The eDeveloper has also been enhanced with support for application monitoring through the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Magic Software introduced a host of other changes in eDeveloper 9.4, including improved performance of browser-based client application through support for multiple transactions from a single browser and new caching capabilities. This release also includes improved security, encryption, and LDAP support; a new set of functions for vector values, buffer management, and memory table persistency; an enhanced syntax checker; and more. Magic eDeveloper supports development on iSeries, Unix, Windows, and Linux operating systems. For more information, go to www.magicsoftware.com.
