RJS Software Delivers Productivity Tools for iSeries

RJS Software Systems earlier this month started
shipping a new suite of file transfer tools to help office workers get the most out of their company's AS/400
and iSeries investments. Called the iSeries Office Integration Bundle, the new software allows users to
access live OS/400 data from PC applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, for such activities as word processing,
creating mail merges, and distributing database queries.
RJS sees the iSeries Office Integration Bundle as a replacement for IBM's OfficeVision/400, a discontinued product that provided e-mail,
word processing, and mail merge functionalities for AS/400s. Officials with the Burnsville, Minnesota,
software company reasoned that, since Word is far and away the most popular word processing program on
the planet, there needed to be an easy way to connect valuable customer data residing in an OS/400
database with Word, for creating office correspondence.
What resulted was the iSeries Office Integration Bundle, a collection of existing RJS products that install on
Windows PCs and OS/400 servers. The RJS products included in the bundle are FTP/400, DataExport/400,
and FTP/400 Remote Command Server.
From a 5250 terminal or 5250 emulation program, users can initiate a range of file transfers and actions. For
example, users can launch Word and run mail merge commands from the 5250 session, as well as open
Word templates and fill in those templates using data from the OS/400 server, useful tools for giving more
of a personal touch to form letters.
Since the bundle can initiate any program on the PC, there are a number of other uses of the software, such
as launching a Web site, sending data to the Windows clipboard, and sending user messages to the PC.
Additionally, the iSeries Office Integration Bundle can push OS/400 database queries and SQL statements
to PC desktops.
The iSeries Office Integration Bundle uses TCP/IP as its communication protocol, requires OS/400 V4R2
or higher, and supports all Windows operating systems since Windows 3.l. It can be run as a stand-alone
application or embedded into RPG, COBOL, or CL programs, and the commands and actions executed by
the bundle can run in interactive mode or be scheduled to run using job scheduling software. RJS says to
